The layoffs are only getting uglier.

If you thought last week’s gauge of U.S. layoffs was ugly, brace yourself for an even more brutal tally Thursday as the economic damage wrought by the coronavirus pandemic mounts.

Economists surveyed by Bloomberg estimate a Labor Department report Thursday morning will show 3.5 million Americans filed initial applications for unemployment insurance last week, up from the record 3.3 million who sought benefits the prior week.

Some economists expect a far bigger total. Nomura forecasts 4.1 million; Morgan Stanley, 4.5 million; and Bank of America, 5.5 million. Such first-time jobless claims represent the best measure of layoffs across the country.

President Trump is currently taking economic advice from doctors who predicted 2.2 million deaths two weeks ago and are predicting 100,000 to 200,000 deaths from the virus today. Their track record is not good to say the least.

In the meantime their destructive advice has obliterated the US economy.

As Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said, “If the remedy is too much the side effect will be much more disastrous.”

Bolsonaro refuses to shut down the Brazilian economy.

US Researchers Develop AI-Powered App to Detect COVID-19 Signs Through Voice Recordings

Researchers at Pennsylvania’s Carnegie Mellon University have created an app that can reportedly determine whether you have COVID-19 by analyzing your voice.

According to the Carnegie Mellon researchers, the app is still in its infancy and has not yet been approved by either the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“I’ve seen a lot of competition for the cheapest, fastest diagnosis you can have,” Benjamin Striner, a Carnegie Mellon graduate student who worked on the app, said in a recent interview with Futurism. “And there are some pretty good ones that are actually really cheap and pretty accurate, but nothing’s ever going to be as cheap and as easy as speaking into a phone.”

The COVID Voice Detector uses artificial intelligence to analyze your voice and give you a score. Users have to cough several times and record certain vowel sounds and the alphabet using either a smartphone or a computer.

“The score is a rating on a scale of 1-10 that tells you the likelihood that your voice carries signatures of COVID-19. The higher the returned rating, the greater the likelihood that you may be infected. In addition, the system provides an assessment of your lung capacity where possible,” the app’s website explains.

However, according to the researchers, the app should not be used to replace medical tests or examinations.

“We have it out there to let people know how it currently performs, but the primary objective of our effort/website at this point of time is to collect large numbers of voice recordings that we could use to refine the algorithm into something we — and the medical community — are confident about,” Carnegie Mellon Professor Bhiksha Raj, who also worked on the app, told Futurism.

The researchers believe the app might eventually be able to track the spread of the coronavirus as more data is collected.

“If the app is to be put out as a public service, it, and our results, will have to be verified by medical professionals, and attested by an agency such as the CDC,” Raj noted. “Until that happens, it’s still very much an experimental and untrustworthy system.”

The researchers also noted that the app will never be as accurate as a lab test.

“In terms of diagnostics, of course, it’s never going to be as as accurate as taking a swab and putting it on some agar and waiting for it to grow,” Striner explained.

The latest data by Johns Hopkins University reveals that there are more than 911,000 cases of the coronavirus globally. The country with the most confirmed cases - more than 200,000 - is the US, which has in recent weeks become the epicenter of the pandemic.

Steven Mosher, author of Bully of Asia: Why China’s Dream is a Threat to World Order, told the Fox News host of “The Ingraham Angle” on Monday night that China has been sending defective equipment to European countries stricken by its latest coronavirus.

“China’s coming in like a ‘white knight’ into Europe with lots of medical supplies, ventilators,” Ingraham told him. “And these Eurozone countries are welcoming them with open arms, not thinking that there’s going to be any strings attached because they’re in crisis.”

Israel's MDA to treat coronavirus patients with new 'passive vaccine'

This assumes that those who have recovered from COVID-19 have developed special anti-virus proteins or antibodies in their plasma, which could therefore help sick patients cope with the disease.

The first patient who recovered from coronavirus donated plasma on Wednesday that will be used to create a “passive vaccine” to treat Israelis who are severely ill with COVID-19, according to Magen David Adom deputy director-general of blood services Prof. Eilat Shinar.

This assumes that those who have recovered from the disease have developed special antivirus proteins or antibodies in their plasma, which could therefore help sick patients cope with it.

“When people are exposed to any disease, they develop antibodies,” Shinar explained.

Passive immunization is when you get those preformed antibodies. An active vaccine, in contrast, is when you are injected with a dead or weakened version of a virus that tricks your immune system into thinking that you’ve had the disease and your immune system creates antibodies to protect you.

In the first phase, plasma will be frozen and then delivered to hospitals across the country for patients to be treated by transfusion, Shinar said. In the second phase, the goal is to collect enough plasma to prepare antibody (immunoglobulin) concentrate with which patients will be treated later.

Shinar said the Health Ministry is currently in discussion with two companies that can create the immunoglobulin and is writing a protocol for who can receive the treatment.

MDA has been collecting plasma for more than 30 years; thousands of volunteers donate blood this way every day. Plasma with antibodies was used to treat patients with SARS during the outbreak in 2002. In addition, Israel offered a similar treatment to patients with West Nile fever.

Last week, Shinar said, the FDA approved a similar protocol in the US.

Earlier this week, The Journal of the American Medical Association published an article about plasma being used to treat five COVID-19 patients in China, which said that it “very much helped in their recovery,” Shinar said.

Before being able to donate plasma, a patient must wait 14 days from the time he or she was confirmed negative for coronavirus via two separate swab tests – hence the reason the first plasma was donated only on April 1. Shinar said that there should be another batch of donors available after Passover – those who were infected over the Purim holiday.

MDA will invite the potential donors to its Pheresis Unit at MDA’s Blood Services Center at Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer. Shinar said that if there are enough donors from a particular city, however, MDA could set up a center there. Donors can also offer to donate on their own by calling 03-530-0445.

Plasma can be given as much as twice a month.

MDA director-general Eli Bin said his organization is at the forefront of the fight against the coronavirus in Israel, and with this new treatment and others being tested in Israel and around the world, “we all hope that together we will overcome this challenge.”
