I know what people are trying to say with this painting of the Battle of Lexington and Concord
However, the first Battle of the American Revolution occured in 1771
On the Great Alamance Creek in North Carolina
When the Regulators, many of them Scots who had fought the English at the Battle of Culloden Moor in April 1746
Having lost the battle, they had to flee for their lives
And many ended up sailing to colonies
In Jamaica, North Carolina and other provinces that the King had established in the Americas
These American Provinces were primarily bound by the sea.
And the Scots made good seamen for a while
And then excellent farmers in the milder climate of most of the King's American Provinces
Only after the conquest of New France in 1759 did Scots venture further north
In quest of the beaver pelt.
But Governor Tryon of North Carolina,
Being the King's representative in the province
Wanted a Palace and so he raised the taxes
When many farmers could not pay
Their farms were taken from them
And they were cast into the wilderness
Where the Scots among them formed the Regulators
To lobby and then to fight against unjust laws.
In May 1771 at the Battle of Alamance Creek (or River as it is remembered)
The regulators met the British forces of Governor Tryon
And lost the battle.
Tryon promptly raised the taxes some more,
And headed to New York in June
Where he was made the governor of that colony.
But the surviving Regulators did not forget
Their story spread through the colonies
And the history of the Scots rising up against the King
At Culloden Moor and now at Alamance Creek
Inspired many a farmer to take up arms with the revolutionaries
5 years later.
The regulators made their stand on May 16, 1771
So I am awaiting May 16, 2020 with great interest.
P.S. It is possible that Trump's Scottish ancestors fought at Culloden Moor
It is also possible that he had a German ancestor who fought as one of the Hessians
On the other side.
