You can range from non-lethal rubber shot or lead ball buck shot which will kill a man if hit head, neck, heart, etc. Or you could load 1 or 2 rubber shot (warning deterrent with the rest buck shot).

If you are willing to strengthen yourself for more recoil, you should consider at least a 20-gauge if your goal is to incapacitate an intruder.

Don't go thru the trouble of getting a pistol permit and then buy a .22 cal. That gun would likely just piss off a bad hombre unless you are calm, collected and practiced enough to hit him between the eyes. But you won't be any of that in a real life situation.
