Hunter Biden and wife Melissa Cohen have welcomed a baby boy amid the coronavirus pandemic, The Post can exclusively reveal.
He’s the fifth child for Biden, the son of presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, and the first for his wife, whom he married just six days after they met.
Melissa’s brother Garyn Cohen told The Post a “beautiful and healthy baby boy” was born in Los Angeles on Saturday, March 28.
Before the birth, Garyn, who lives in Melissa’s native South Africa, added: “We are ecstatic about the baby. We actually feel that like a time like this, with the whole world in crisis, bringing a beautiful baby into the world is an opportunity to focus on the good, instead of this virus that is ravaging the world and causing a pandemic.”
He revealed that Melissa was not worried about giving birth amid the pandemic, saying she was just focused on her baby.
Joe Biden will not be able to meet his grandson just yet as he’s in lockdown at his Delaware home.
The baby’s arrival comes just weeks after Hunter Biden’s lawyers reached a final child support settlement with Lunden Roberts, the Arkansas mother of his young daughter who he had first argued was not his — after a judge blasted the former vice president’s son for his repeated attempts to delay the case, likely avoiding the release of financial documents that could expose his business dealings abroad. Lunden gave birth in August 2018.
Biden’s camp argued he would be unable to attend scheduled hearings, citing the approaching due date of his pregnant wife, “intense media scrutiny” caused by his father’s presidential bid and travel restrictions caused by the coronavirus. The claims were rejected by Arkansas Circuit Judge Holly Meyer.
Biden was married for 24 years to Kathleen Biden, with whom he has three grown daughters.
After the couple split in 2015, Biden dated Hallie Biden, the widow of his elder brother, Beau, a former Delaware attorney general who died of brain cancer in 2015. They broke up in early 2019, as revealed by The Post. He married Melissa in May 2019. In October, he told ABC News they met through a friend of hers, who jotted Melissa’s phone number onto his hand and insisted he call her.
Hunter got a “shalom” tattoo to match Melissa’s within days of meeting her and they were married at her apartment less than a week later; neither had their families in attendance and the wedding photos were taken by a friend on a cellphone.
He said he leveled with her about his past, including the tragic deaths of his mother, sister and brother, decades of struggling with addiction and a turbulent divorce, adding: “I instantly fell in love with her. And then I’ve fallen in love with her more every day.”
His dad thanked Melissa for “giving my son the courage to love again.”
Melissa said she believed “the truth will prevail” in relation to the row over her husband’s controversial position on the board of Burisma, an oil and gas company in Ukraine, and described her husband as “an incredible human being” who “very much cares about his country and his family and his friends and his children.” Biden reportedly got paid $50,000 a month to sit on the board.
Biden admitted: “In retrospect, look, I think that it was poor judgment on my part. Is that I think that it was poor judgment because I don’t believe now, when I look back on it — I know that there was — did nothing wrong at all.
“However, was it poor judgment to be in the middle of something that is … a swamp in — in — in many ways? Yeah.”
“I gave a hook to some very unethical people to act in illegal ways to try to do some harm to my father. That’s where I made the mistake,” said Biden. “So I take full responsibility for that. Did I do anything improper? No, not in any way. Not in any way whatsoever.”
