FWIW, Anon, my mom was O- and this was always the case with her. They did not want her to donate blood at regular blood drives, but asked her to be "on call" instead. I can recall 2-3 times during my childhood that the local volunteer emergency squad came to pick my mom up and brought her to the local hospital so she could give blood. Then they'd bring her back home. (This was during the 60's and she did not drive.)
