We had data early on from somewhere about how this worked. The gas exchange from alveoli to blood starts to break down because the fluid around the sacks thickens decreasing oxygen transfer.
That's why using more pressure would be bad but increasing oxygen content would be good.
You misunderstand. The sacks themselves are not filled with fluid (normal pneumonia) the fluid BETWEEN the sacks and the blood; gets thick and oxygen transfer goes down.
