Specifically it stops the over reaction of the immune system. Hence why people with very "mature" immune systems (elderly) have a terrible time with it. Their bodies kick into overdrive to kill it.
This virus is particularly nasty bc it causes hardening of the lung tissue which means the lungs cannot process oxygen. The fibrosis of the lungs will cause permanent scarring which is scary.
