SAN DIEGO โ€” An apparent human smuggling attempt ended with five people in custody after a high-speed chase from Otay to El Cajon, a Border Patrol agent said Monday.

The incident started about 10:30 p.m. Sunday when Border Patrol agents using scope sights spotted a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban pull over along Otay Lakes Road near Brown Field and four people jumped in, Agent Fabian Carbajal said.

Agents chased the SUV, following it as the driver hopped onto state Route 125 and headed north. With a law enforcement helicopter overhead, the chase reached speeds of 100 mph, Carbajal said.

The driver eventually made his way to eastbound Interstate 8, and got off the freeway on El Cajon Boulevard in El Cajon. About 10:50 p.m., the driver pulled the Suburban over near Millar Avenue. Everyone inside the SUV jumped out and ran.

Authorities, including Border Patrol agents and El Cajon police, caught and arrested the driver.

They also arrested a man who had been a passenger in the SUV when it initially stopped to pick up the group along Otay Lakes Road.

Authorities also caught three of the four people who had climbed into the car. The fourth person got away.

The driver was a U.S. citizen. The initial passenger and three men who were picked up are Mexican, Carbajal said.

for the old anons:

=Wishing Happy Trails to James Drury==

Alas, weโ€™ve lost another one of the great TV cowboys: James Drury, who rode tall for nine seasons in prime time and decades of reruns on broadcast and cable outlets as The Virginian, has left us at age 85.

The tragic news was delivered by the actorโ€™s assistant, Karen Lindsey, on Facebook: โ€œIt is with immense sadness that I let you all know that James Drury, our beloved Virginian and dear friend passed away this morning of natural causes, Monday, April 6, 2020. He will be missed so much. It is beyond words. Memorial service to be determined later.โ€

From 1962 to 1971 on NBC, Drury authoritatively played the title character in The Virginian, the tough but fair-minded foreman on the Shiloh Ranch in late 19th-century Medicine Bow, Wyoming. (He remained in the role even after the series was renamed The Men from Shiloh for its final season.) Prior to landing the part, the New York-born actor appeared in several film and television westerns, including Love Me Tender (opposite Elvis Presley), Ride the High Country (directed by Sam Peckinpah), The Last Wagon, Good Day for a Hanging, Gunsmoke, Cheyenne, Rawhide, Wagon Train and Death Valley Days.

Drury later starred in the short-lived 1974 TV drama Firehouse, and guest-starred in such series and TV-movies as The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw, Alias Smith and Jones, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. and Walker, Texas Ranger. But he remained best known for The Virginian, which continues to attract a loyal audience on Grit TV, INSP and other platforms. In 2016, he spoke with C&I about the show โ€” and the secret of its lasting appeal.

Good copy, anon. Most people age 80+ are gonna die in batches. As for the old TV Westerns, there was a time in this country when rough-riding hero men from the 1800s were portrayed in Hollywood as courageous and fair-minded; and they didn't hit or rape women. Not so much anymore. White man bad now.

France reports record toll of 833 new coronavirus deaths

Agence France-Presse

Posted at Apr 07 2020 03:48 AM

France on Monday reported that 833 more people had died of COVID-19 in hospitals and nursing homes over the previous 24 hours, its highest daily toll since the epidemic began.

"We have not reached the end of the ascent of this epidemic," Health Minster Olivier Veran told reporters, as he announced the new toll which brought the total number killed in the coronavirus epidemic in France to 8,911.

The figures were a reminder to France โ€“ which has been in lockdown since March 17 in a bid to slow the spread of the virus โ€“ of the long road ahead after several days where key data had improved somewhat.

France is now giving a daily combined toll of deaths in hospitals and nursing homes.

Previously it had only given the hospital toll on a daily basis.

Of the new deaths, 605 were registered in hospitals, Veran said.

"It is not over. Far from that. The path is long. The figures that I have announced show this," he said. "Stay at home and continue this confinement effort," he added.

Veran said that 478 more people had gone into intensive care over the last 24 hours, a higher figure than in previous days.

But in more positive news, he said that counting patients who had left intensive care, there were just a net total of 94 more patients in intensive care, the lowest such figure since the confinement began.

"We see that the confinement has a palpable impact. In France we are beginning to feel it."

Veran said that the latest figures from statistical modelling showed that the reproduction rate (R0) โ€“ the number of people an average infected person infects โ€“ was falling in France.

If the number is under 1.0 it means the average victim infects less than one person, giving hope that the epidemic will end.

"Thanks to the confinement, this R0 is around 1.0 and probably a little under and in some regions clearly under.

"In other regions it is above 1.0 so this is why we must stay at home."

Veran said that in nursing homes โ€“ where a total of 2,417 people have died since the start of the epidemic โ€“ a "vast operation" of testing would begin to better protect residents.
