London Pics

Red Bus stop sign chronology.

29 October 2013 - City of Westminster approved changes to bus stand and approved changes to flags in the vicinity of location of Q pic Fsurv_londonps1.

December 2013 - Planned start of demolition / construction of Communications House, 48 Leicester Square, Westminster, UK.

23 March 2014 - Outside work began on demolition / construction.

July 2012 Street View image of bus sign shows it was different than the bus sign that appeared in Q's pic of Red Bus.

May 2014 Street View image of bus sign indicates it was the same as the bus sign that appeared in Red Bus pic.

December 2013 to 2016 - Renovation of 48 Leicester Square planned for two year period.

Based on this evidence, the Red Bus pic was taken some time between 29 October 2013 (when changes were approved for the bus stand and its sign) and 23 March 2014 (when news photo showed work had begun on the exterior of 48 Leicester Square).

Given the winter jackets and hats displayed in the Red Bus pic, the pic was taken some time during the winter months of November-December 2013 and January-February-March 2014. There is some pictorial evidence that people wore winter jackets and hats during April 2014, also.

Moar sauce - pictorial evidence on bus stand in the Red Bus pic.

  1. Bus Stand at the location of RED BUS pic, May 2015, note the covering on 48 Leicester Square, features image of a black bird.

  1. Close-up of bus sign, May 2014.

  1. Bus stand, July 2014. Note the covering and scaffolding on 48 Leicester Square. Note the sign (bottom left of frame) re traffic control ahead at corner where bus stand is located. Also note the work area behind blue tarp (mid-right side of frame).

The indications of construction were not present within Q's Red Bus pic.

London pics.

Q's RED BUS pic, Fsurv_londonps1.

  1. View of bus stand vis-a-vis taxi rank along Coventry Street, as per the City map in previous post. These two bus signs were installed before construction had begun earlier in winter of 2013/2014.

  1. View of location of RED BUS pic, May 2014. Note the white storefront (mid-left frame) which is reflected in the bus panels in Fsurv_londonps1. Possibly the Q pic was taken from one of the security cameras mounted on storefronts or just inside doorways.

Again, the signs of construction in the street at this time did not appear in Q's pic.

  1. View of the scene of Q's pic after construction had been completed. Note the changes to the facade of 48 Leicester Square and note the change in its roof. These did not appear in Q's pic.

Red Bus pic compared with Street View images to confirm location.

Compare the following features:

A. Ticket kiosk flank.

B. Yellow side of roof peak on kiosk.

C. Door and small window on building across the street (48 Leicester Square) before construction on that building.

D. Pattern of windows on that building's 2nd floor.

E. Pattern of tall windows on ground level of that building.

  1. Entrance to the McDonalds restaurant at street level.

  2. Upper corner of tall window on 48 Leicester Square.

Features in Street View images match those in Q's Red Bus pic and confirms the previous notes on dating Fsurv_londonps1.

London Pics

Views of the bus stands on Whitcomb Street that the City moved due to the construction at 48 Leicester Square.

  1. Pre-construction use by the open-top tour buses, The Original Bus Tour. One of these stands would be re-located to the stand in Q's Red Bus pic. Another would be re-located to Piccadilly Circus.

  1. Another view of those bus stands. Note the windows.

  1. A view in the reverse direction. The ground space for these bus stands were used for the scaffolding during construction. Also an entrance into the building was opened at this location.

  1. View of the type of bus sign used prior to construction on these Whitcomb Street bus stands. This is the style that replaced the previous sign at the location of Q's Red Bus pic. This is the style that is featured in that pic. And so helps date Fsurv_londonps1.

Anons, in this pic that Q dropped there is a view of PS, hence the ps in the image title. Can you see him?

  1. View of same location, (2015), from Whitcomb Street.

  1. Close-up of the type (2014) of bus sign that appeared in Q's pic. Note inset image of tour bus in same location as the Red Bus. Also note the white storefront and pattern of windows on 2nd floor – which were reflected in side panels of the double-decker bus in Q's pic.

London Pics

Interesting Street View image of a double decker bus, very like the one that appeared in Q's Red Bus pic, which was at the bus stand at the curb of the Corinthia Hotel (July 2016), Northumberland Avenue. Note the steps up to the footbridge in the background (top left frame) and the intersection below which featured in another of Q's London pics.

Also note the type of bus stand sign at this location on Northumberland Avenue. It is the type that had been at the location of the Red Bus pic – before it was changed due to the construction at 48 Leicester Square. This adds to the pictorial evidence that helps date Fsurv_londonps1.

Moar to come, Anons. These pics have significance re IG reports and future declass.

Pictorial evidence for locating and dating the Red Bus pic and linking it to Northumberland Avenue and the Corinthia Hotel (scene of other London pics).

Interdasting sidenote: the type of double decker bus featured in Q's pic does not appear in Street View images (nor in general) at that bus stop.

To clarify on dig request:

Looking for photos of red double decker bus in the vicinity of Coventry Street and entrance to Leicester Square, near the location of the Red Bus pic.

The type of bus is a Routemaster Lengthened, or RML, and can be identified by the open platform at the rear (in lieu of doors), bright red color (natch), and the square shaped middle window on the second level. There are shorter double deckers known as RMs - Routemasters. Evidence of either type would be appreciated.

It appears that the bus in Q's pic was a private hire as that stop was not on a TfL (Transit for London) route at that time.

Example of the type of bus that appeared in Q's Red Bus pic and which the dig is for.

RML Routemaster Lengthened.

Note square shaped windows in middle of bus.

Note the rear open platform for passengers.

Note the driver entrance requires a step up into the compartment, and a hop down to exit to the street level (traffic side, mind you).

TY Anon.

Was the billboard in one of the Q pics – or somehow linked to one of those pics?

There is a steakhouse on ground level whose signage changed (2011 IIRCC) and that storefront can be seen in the distant background of the pic of Piccadilly Circus.

And here's why, "brilliant".

Shows the giant LED screen contemporaneously with the entrance to the Piccadilly Circus underground station – without the ticket kiosk building – matching the Q pic of this location.

Brilliant, also, due to bright billboard, natch.
