Heres the main points to offgridding:

  1. Get enough acreage to use a conventional septic tank (my area over 12 was qualification)- Cant rely on aerobic using electricity!

(you will appreciate the privacy)

  1. Make sure water (well) is available, I drilled first thing after buying land (rented the rig, so there is no permit for well, drilled myself- not complicated really). Would have flipped land if no water found.

  2. I got a metal building that was a "barn package" - paid cash for it (no loans). Cheap property taxes, and used AG exemption.

  3. Built a "barndominium" inside the metal building. From satellite, the barn went up, and was finished, but inside took 2years to "nice up!"

  4. Pay a guy cash to not report septic system, or rent a backhoe (I own one). It's easy enough, just need to be careful.

  5. Install your solar system. I suggest using forklift batteries (cells are 2Volts ea when broken apart). So 12, 24, or 48v systems can be done. Make enough power to run your well pump and use LED lighting, and a modern fridge uses average of 30w (under 1kw per day without being opened often - 1.25kw if heavy use).

Ebay has good deals on most solar stuff, but a local "industrial battery forklift place" would be best for batts.

Good luck with your dream. I love it.
