On the other hand we can see how this card can also be seen to symbolically represent a successful completion of the full circle of life. The androgyny can be seen to represent the successful integration and balance of both male and female attributes on the psychological level. The sun can be representative of enlightenment, being a son of God and illumination. The dog at his heels, rather than nipping at his heels, rather can be seen as being "at his feet" and following his lead. Thus he has dominion over his animal instincts. He is unconcerned about his situation, ie being at a cliff's edge, as he has full faith in God. He sees the folly trying to achieve wisdom and knowledge. He is quite happy with "not knowing" and happy to step off in any direction that God has planned for him. This is echoed in 1 Corinthians 3:19 when Paul says "If any of you thinks he is wise in this age, he should become a fool, so that he may become wise". We can also see the parallels with Jesus Christ, who had full faith in God, his will be in total alignment of the will of God behind his back.

Thus we can argue quite compellingly that the Fool card can be seen as both the starting point and the ending point and symbolically represented as the circle. Hence, the fool trump is often unnumbered or written as 0/zero as the card in the image.

Zero is of course a circle. Zero is fascinating number mathematically and the circle is symbolic of the divine (see page on "Coming full circe"). Zero is nothingness. The ancient Greeks did not have a number for zero, arguing the philosophical question, "how can nothing be something".

The derivation of the name Fool is the latin word follis, meaning "bag of wind". Hence we can equate the Fool with air or spirit. In John 4:24, Jesus declares that "God is spirit". Paul called Him "the invisible God" (Colossians 1:15), and "the King eternal, immortal, invisible" (1 Timothy 1:17). John declares "no man has seen God at any time" (John 1:18). What does this mean?. It seams to mean that God is without form. The Fool is also depicted as being formless, having transcended or mastered his mortal excistance and body, dwelling with God in the spirit, but still remaining within the world and having a body and mortal existence.
