The most important issue is to know some of the "rules."
For example, in some traditions the best way to stop a vampire is to carry a small bag of salt with you. If you are being chased, you need only to spill the salt on the ground behind you, at which point the vampire is obligated to stop and count each and every grain before continuing the pursuit.
If you don't have salt handy, some say that any small granules will do, including birdseed and sand. (It is not known if this defense works on vampires who don't exhibit obsessive-compulsive traits.)
Just make sure they are not a Salt Vampire.

Salt Vampire, or M-113 creature, is the unofficial nickname given to a now extinct sapient species which once inhabited planet M-113.
This creature is notable for requiring extremely large quantities of salt, specifically sodium chloride, to live. It can remove salt directly through the skin of other beings using the sucker-like structures on its fingers, a process which usually results in the death of the victim. Also noteworthy are the creature's illusory shapeshifting abilities.
Although it cannot physically change its appearance, it can use telepathy to project an illusion into the minds of those around it, making it appear like any person it wants.

It all started 50 years ago today, 9.8,66. Star Trek: The Original Series' officially kicked off not with “The Cage” and not even with “Where No Man Has Gone Before.” Rather, the first episode fans saw that night was… “The Man Trap.”
It’s neither the best nor the worst Star Trek episode, but everyone remembers the monster,
the M-113 Creature, a/k/a The Salt Vampire.
