Back when Revelation was written, the Church was being absorbed into the machinations of Rome. It was included in the Bible because these people are stupid.
Rome basically went around, destroying churches and burning books up until they realized they could use this to organize their empire.
Thus, they effectively destroyed the Roman Empire and replaced it with Christendom. The Pope is (or was) the Roman Emperor. From here, they ordained regional rulers as being divinely appointed to their positions and orchestrated much of what would become the European nobility.
IE - a world government relatively speaking.
The beast. Babylon.
The Church is the Beast. Congratulations - your Great G^25 grandfather(s) survived the rapture and here you are.
