Try using https://www.marinetraffic.com for initial contact and https://www.myshiptracking.com/ for recent port calls (marinetraffic tends list very few and scrubs them quickly when they hit a major port like Los Angeles) and most times http://www.vesseltracking.net will reveal the operator of a vessel.
