As Backlash Grows, Legal Challenges to Lockdown

Unlikely to Succeed, Say Experts

BY MATTHEW VADUM

April 9, 2020 Updated: April 9, 2020

"A backlash appears to be brewing among Americans who question the wisdom of curtailing their right to move freely and assemble in order to combat the CCP virus, experts consulted by The Epoch Times said.

The nation’s governors have invoked sweeping emergency powers to combat the virus that causes the disease COVID-19. Most Americans are now under stay-at-home orders that are intended to fight the contagion by minimizing human interaction."

USS Theodore Roosevelt sailors comprise more than half

of Navy’s coronavirus cases

Published: April 8, 2020

"More than half of all U.S. sailors who have tested positive for coronavirus are attached to the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, according to Navy data released Wednesday.

Across the Navy, 548 service members have contracted the illness and 286 of those are Roosevelt sailors, the update said. Nearly all the ship’s crew has been tested, with 10% coming back positive. None have been hospitalized.

It’s unclear with which ships, installations or units the remaining cases are associated. The Department of Defense late last month directed all services to refrain from releasing coronavirus numbers specific to commands."

Virus could push half a billion people into poverty

"The economic fallout from the coronavirus could increase global poverty by as much a half a billion.

This bleak warning comes from a United Nations (UN) study into the financial and human cost of the pandemic.

It will be the first time that poverty has increased globally in 30 years, according to the report.

The findings come ahead of key meetings of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and G20 finance ministers next week.

The United Nations University study was written by experts at King's College London and Australian National University (ANU).

"The economic crisis is potentially going to be even more severe than the health crisis," said Christopher Hoy from ANU.

The report, which estimates a 400-600 million increase in the number of people in poverty across the globe, says the potential impact of the virus poses a real challenge to the UN Sustainable Development Goal of ending poverty by 2030."
