Fujifilm to start clinical trial of antiviral drug Avigan in US
TOKYO (Kyodo) – Fujifilm Holdings Corp. said Thursday it will start clinical tests of its antiviral drug Avigan in the United States for patients of the new coronavirus. The drug, developed by a group firm of Fujifilm Holdings Corp., has been stored in Japan as a treatment for influenza. Reports in China showed that the drug has been effective in treating COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus.
Fujifilm said the tests in the United States, following its clinical trial launched last week in Japan, will enroll some 50 COVID-19 patients in collaboration with Brigham and Women's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of Massachusetts Medical School. On March 31, Fujifilm Toyama Chemical Co. began its clinical trial of Avigan for patients in Japan. If the safety and efficacy of Avigan is confirmed, the Japanese government might approve the drug for use in COVID-19 treatment this summer.
Fujifilm Holdings has been asked by the government to increase the output of the drug in the wake of the spread of the virus. In a stimulus package approved Tuesday, the government earmarked 13.9 billion yen ($127 million) to triple the national stockpile of Avigan, enough to treat 2 million people. The drug has also been increasingly sought by foreign governments. Japan plans to provide Avigan for free to 20 countries hoping to use it to treat COVID-19 patients and will provide the United Nations Office for Project Services with a $1 million grant to buy and distribute the drug.
Since the drug, also known as Favipiravir, is feared to cause birth defects, it cannot be used on expectant mothers or women who might become pregnant. The drug is considered for use only when the Japanese government decides to use the drug as a countermeasure against an outbreak of novel or re-emerging influenza virus infections in which other antiviral drugs are not effective.
The drug is therefore only manufactured and distributed upon request by the Japanese government and is not distributed in the domestic market or approved for distribution in the United States or in any other countries, according to Fujifilm.
