Dear Friend,

I am writing today to address concerns that many of you have expressed to me about the ability to participate in elections during the novel coronavirus (COVID19) pandemic. Ensuring that all Americans can still vote regardless of outside circumstances is a top priority for me.

During my time in Congress I have fought to maintain the integrity and openness of elections, and rarely has there been as great or as explicit a threat to voting as the one we see today. Even as our elected leaders and health experts urge social distancing and “flattening the curve,” people are forced to gather in large numbers in order to perform their civic duty and vote. Directing people to leave their houses to vote on an election day in the face of a pandemic is unsafe and unfair.

That is why organizing a complete vote-by-mail system is so important. The CARES Act, the third coronavirus relief package signed into law on March 27, included $400 million for election assistance to do just that. This funding will give states the ability to organize new systems and work out the logistics so that we can get vote-by-mail up and running as soon as possible.

Additionally, I believe that we have to recognize the importance of the United States Postal Service (USPS) in making vote-by-mail a reality: without USPS, there is no way to do it. That is why Democrats advocated for supplemental funding for USPS in the CARES Act and will continue to do so in the future.

Americans shouldn’t have to choose between voting and their health. The ability to freely and safely express our values at the ballot box is the cornerstone of our democracy. Please know that I consider safeguarding Americans’ ability to vote one of my most important jobs as a Congressman, and that I will continue to fight for just that moving forward.

As Congress continues working to address the coronavirus pandemic, I want to hear from you- please reach out to my office through my website or by calling (202) 225-4065.
