The standard theory of how Devil's Tower formed is that it was a volcanic magma plug that solidified and crystallized into it's hexagonal columns (Which occurs all over the world in vast geological layers of basalt that are obviously not tree stumps) And then over eons the surrounding material eroded away leaving the core Basalt Tower in place.
Hexagons form in nature because they represent the most efficient stacking of circles in geometric space. Energy flows in a way that seeks the greatest efficiency, ergo hexagons form where energy is flowing. Hexagonal basalt forms as liquid minerals are crystallizing and radiating heat out as they cool (To dissipate efficiently they self organize at the molecular level forming into hexagons of varying scale).
Hexagonal craters are not formed by impacts, they are excavated by vast amounts of electricity being channeled through the lithosphere of a planetary body.
