Maxine Waters: Trump Can Not Wipe Away the History

of His Pandemic Failure

PAM KEY

9 Apr 2020

"Thursday on MSNBC, “All In,” Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) said President Donald Trump could not wipe away the history of his administration’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hayes said, “You’ve served in Congress for a long time. You’ve seen different congressional caucuses come and go, different leadership structures, different presidents. Does it strike you, I’m curious how it strikes you to watch Republicans who, during the Obama administration, particularly everything was austerity, where is the money coming from? How are you going to pay for that? Today say hey, we got to load up $250 billion, let’s have a vote on it today. A striking turn about it seems to me.”"

EU Court Of Justice Rules Poland, Hungary

Czech Republic Broke EU Law

Fri, 04/10/2020 - 06:00

"The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has ruled that Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic broke EU law when they refused to take in migrants under the European Union's September 2015 relocation agreement. During the 2015 migrant crisis, EU leaders agreed to relocate 160,000 migrants and refugees EU-wide, assigning each EU member state a fixed quota from the camps in Italy and Greece, where migrants and refugees were arriving in record numbers. However, the Czech Republic accepted only 12 of the 2,000 refugees assigned it, while Hungary and Poland took in none.

In 2017, the EU took Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) over that refusal to take migrants. On April 2, 2020, the CJEU ruled against the three countries. The ruling followed the October 2019 recommendation by the Court's Advocate General, legal advisor to the Court, which said that EU law must be followed and that the EU's principle of solidarity "necessarily sometimes implies accepting burden-sharing".

In its judgment, the Court dismissed the three countries' argument that they were entitled to refuse the relocation scheme based on concerns for the maintenance of law and order and the safeguarding of internal security. The Court agreed that those concerns constituted legitimate reasons to derogate from obligations of EU law. However, the Court ruled that EU member states refusing to take in migrants under the relocation scheme could only legitimately do so if they proved, "following a case-by-case investigation, on consistent, objective and specific evidence that provides grounds for suspecting that the applicant in question represents an actual or potential danger".

As Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic had not proven any specific and concrete danger for each of the migrants that they refused to take in under the relocation scheme, they had not been justified in "suspending the implementation of or even ceasing to implement its obligations under the relocation decisions".

The Court's ruling comes at a time when the European Union is experiencing unprecedented disunity over the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and just weeks after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's recent, and muscular attempts at utilizing migrants for the purpose of political blackmail against EU leaders."

Vatican Thanks China for ‘Solidarity’ in Donating Medical

Supplies for Pandemic

THOMAS D. WILLIAMS, PH.D.

Apr 10 2020

"ROME — The Vatican has issued a public statement thanking China for its solidarity with the Holy See shown in donations of medical supplies to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

“In recent days, donations of medical supplies have arrived from China to the Vatican Pharmacy,” reads a statement Thursday from Matteo Bruni, papal spokesman and director of the Holy See Press Office, “in particular through the organizations of the Red Cross Society of China and the Hebei Jinde Charities Foundation, as an expression of the solidarity of the Chinese people and Catholic communities with those involved in the relief of those affected by Covid-19 and the prevention of the current coronavirus epidemic.”

“The Holy See appreciates this generous gesture and expresses its gratitude to the bishops, the Catholic faithful, the institutions and all other Chinese citizens for this humanitarian initiative, assuring them of the esteem and prayers of the Holy Father,” the communiqué concludes.

In recent years, the Vatican has adopted a conciliatory approach in dealing with China’s communist regime (CCP) in the hope of reopening diplomatic relations.

In September 2018, the Vatican signed a secret agreement with the CCP regarding the appointment of bishops in China and later told Catholic clergy that they are free to join the state-run Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association, which is independent of Rome.

For his part, Pope Francis has insisted that the communist government protects religious freedom in China and that “churches are full.” Meanwhile, the chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, the Argentinian Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, has proclaimed that the CCP has created the best model for living out Catholic social teaching today.

The pope has refused to criticize the intense crackdown on religious freedom by the government of Xi Jinping and has kept silent concerning the repression of student pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.

According to recent reports, the CCP has been using the Wuhan coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to intensify its clampdown on religion, bulldozing some Christian churches and placing others under heavy surveillance."

Peru Quarantined Americans in Hostel, Sprayed Them with Bleach

BEN KEW

9 Apr 2020

"Officials in Peru doused a group of Americans with bleach as they tried to leave the country after being placed in a nationwide quarantine, according to footage and witness testimony obtained by The Washington Post.

The incident took place after dozens of tourists were quarantined at the Pariwana hostel in Cusco, Peru, for two weeks after health officials identified two hostel guests as carriers of the Chinese coronavirus. Rather than quarantining the two individuals who tested positive, authorities told the group that they must stay in the hostel for a minimum of 28 days and possibly up to several months.

Conditions in the hostel holding 120 people, which included the group of Americans, reportedly began to deteriorate as guests complained of insufficient food offerings and a lack of information from the Peruvian government.

The concept of social distancing was also somewhat undermined by the fact that they were forced into cramped rooms with bunk beds. The situation reportedly reached an apex when authorities lined guests up outside and doused them in bleach.

“We were shocked,” Daniel Voznyarskiy, a 22-year-old student at the University of Washington, told the Post. “We had no warning whatsoever. They made us do a 360, sprayed us with bleach and sprayed our bags. I closed my eyes and plugged my nose.”"

The conspiracy linking 5G to the coronavirus just will not die

April 9, 2020, 9:28 pm

"As the spread of the coronavirus is proving difficult to contain, so too is the misinformation surrounding it.

One of the most recent, baseless conspiracy theories surrounding the virus is that 5G networks – the next generation of wireless technology that’s steadily being rolled out around the world – are fueling the coronavirus pandemic. They are not.

Unfounded claims about a supposed link between 5G and COVID-19 began circulating on the fringes of the internet, where New Agers and

QAnon followers perpetuated the hoax that global elites

were using 5G to spread the virus. Unsophisticated algorithms amplified those voices and ushered unsubstantiated theories into the mainstream.

Officials in the United Kingdom have expressed concerns that recent attacks on cellphone towers were motivated by false conspiracy theories. Meanwhile, actor Woody Harrelson and singer M.I.A. are among celebrities and influencers spreading such claims to their millions of followers.

There’s no evidence to support the theory that 5G networks cause COVID-19 or contribute to its spread. But still, it refuses to die."
