Bob Lazar's job was to get people to believe that things they saw flying around Area 51 were alien and/or anti-gravity craft. It was so that when they saw something they go tell their friends "Hey, I just saw a UFO! It has suchnsuch shape, etc" and so their friends would roll their eyes and say "Oh, yeah, sure you did. See any little green men flying it?". That way detailed description didn't get reported by local news papers, so no one looked into it closer, and so info was less likely to get leaked to the Soviets.
