Singapore BANS teachers from using Zoom after lessons get ‘porn-bombed’

Singapore has ordered educators to stop using the video chat program Zoom after hackers ‘spiced up’ school lessons with pornography. The move comes as the app’s security woes led to a ban by NASA and others.

In one recent incident, a student’s mother said hackers commandeered a Zoom stream, posting obscene images in the chat before asking girls in the class to “flash their chests,” according to a local report. The episode is one among many similar security breaches reported recently, which are on the rise as students in the former British colony and around the world are forced to learn remotely due to coronavirus-related travel restrictions and school closures.

“These are very serious incidents,” said Ministry of Education official Aaron Loh, referring to two recent cases of hacking in Singapore. He added that the agency “is currently investigating both breaches and will lodge a police report if warranted.”

Though Loh said teachers had been given security guidelines to follow, asking that they not share meeting links with anyone but students and requiring secure log-ins to access the chats, the hacking has continued unabated, prompting the ministry to temporarily ban the program altogether.

As a precautionary measure, our teachers will suspend their use of Zoom until these security issues are ironed out.

Home-based learning will continue in Singapore, however, with teachers using a variety of tools besides the notoriously insecure Zoom program, which has already been banned for official use by Taiwan, the German Foreign Ministry, the US space agency NASA, as well as for employees of Google.

As the coronavirus pandemic pushes greater numbers of people to convene virtually, privacy concerns have arisen as well. ‘Zoom bombers’ – the name given to the app’s profanity and nudity-obsessed hackers – are far from the only thing plaguing big tech chat apps. Apple’s video chat platform, FaceTime, was shown to have its own privacy issues last year, with a technical glitch allowing callers to listen in on recipients before they answered calls. Other options, such as Google Hangouts and Skype, lack end-to-end encryption, itself a significant security loophole.

New German Study Finds Coronavirus Mortality Rate at 0.37% – Ten Times Less Than Flawed WHO Numbers that Sent Global Community into a Panic

A new study released this week in Germany shows the mortality rate of the coronavirus factoring in the asymptomatic cases is much lower than is being reported.

The German study found that around 15% of the population in the Gangelt had the coronavirus antibodies and were infected at some point. Using this data the researchers concluded that the coronavirus mortality rate was 0.37%.

This is good news.

It shows the coronavirus is only slightly more deadly than a seasonal flu.

This also means the experts at the World Health Organization were off by a factor of 10.

WHO leader, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stoked fear across the planet when he claimed the COVID-19 had a 3.4% mortality rate and then compared that to the annual estimated flu mortality rate of 0.1%.

It’s not clear if he yet understands his mistake.

Regardless, it sent the global community into a collective economic meltdown.

We don’t know how horrible the economic damage will be but we know it will be huge.

And we are still nowhere near the total flu deaths we see each year.

Massachusetts finds ‘significantly higher than expected’ levels of coronavirus in wastewater; actual number of cases could be much larger: report

New research has exposed the existence of "significantly higher than expected" levels of the coronavirus in Massachusetts wastewater.

Such research has prompted some scientists to speculate that many more people have the coronavirus than previously believed.

According to Newsweek, such research is not uncommon.

"Wastewater analysis of this kind has previously been used by scientists to track other infectious diseases, as well as substance abuse in a given population," the outlet reported. "Now, several research groups around the world have started using this method to look for the novel coronavirus in a bid to estimate how many people are infected in a community."

So what does this mean?

The study, published on medRxiv, was conducted by Biobot Analytics, but it has not yet been peer-reviewed.

The biotech company carried out the research between March 18 and March 25 at a "major urban treatment facility" in Massachusetts.

Researchers revealed that "[v]iral titers observed were significantly higher than expected based on clinically confirmed cases in Massachusetts as of March 25."

Mariana Matus, CEO of Biobot as well as one of the study's authors, told Stat News that the company shared the information with the Boston Public Health Commission as well as the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

"They could believe that [our] numbers could be correct and not out of the realm of possibility," Matus said. "It was interesting that our estimation was definitely higher than the number of confirmed cases in the area."

Eric Alm, another study author, said that the public is not necessarily at a heightened risk because of the virus titer level in the wastewater.

"Even if those viral particles are no longer active or capable of infecting humans, they may still carry genetic material that can be detected using an approach called PCR (polymerase chain reaction), which amplifies the genetic signal many orders of magnitude, creating billions of copies of the genome for each starting virus," Alm said.

He continued, "We use a technique called qPCR or quantitative PCR to estimate how many copies of SARS-COV-2 specific genomes are present in a given sample."

At the time of this writing, at least 18,941 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Massachusetts, and at least 503 have died because of the virus.

Malta closes its ports to migrants

Malta has informed the European Union that it is closing all of its ports to illegal migrants as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The Armed Forces of Malta rescued a boat carrying approximately 60 migrants on Thursday that was in the Maltese SAR (Search and Rescue) Zone. The boat had already been refused permission to dock in Italy and had been monitored for some time before the decision was made to accept them. The Maltese authorities said that the group would be allowed to disembark, but would be held in detention, according to a report by Malta Today.

However, Malta then informed the European Commission that after this incident, they would no longer accept migrants, regardless of whether they are with an NGO-sponsored vessel or not.

Malta’s Superintendent of Public Health, P​rof. Charmaine Gauci, has declared a state of emergency because of the virus and banned all travel into the country, including by migrants. The government said that allowing migrants to enter would endanger all of the work that is being done in the country to prevent the virus from spreading.

“For many years, the Maltese government has carried a weight greater than it could carry in terms of irregular immigration,” the Maltese government said in a statement. “Despite our limited resources and our small size as the smallest EU member state, Malta provided a haven for thousands of people. But now, Malta has no choice but to take decisions that reflect the extraordinary circumstances at present.”

Malta currently has reported 350 confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection, and has suffered two deaths. The island nation in the Mediterranean has a population of approximately 494,000 people.

Malta has already seen an outbreak of the coronavirus in a migrant camp on the island of Hal Far that it is hosting, which holds approximately 1,000 people. The camp was placed under quarantine, as previously reported by Voice of Europe.

Finland Latest Country to Receive Faulty Chinese Protective Equipment

The CEO of the Finnish Centre for Security of Supply has announced that the first order of respirators and medical equipment delivered from China does not pass European standards.

CEO Tomi Lounema stated that the medical equipment, which Finland received earlier this week, did not pass tests that would allow for it to be used in the country’s hospitals. The Ministry of Social Affairs stated the equipment could be used in other situations.

Protective medical supplies are beginning to run low in parts of Finland. According to Lounema, more supplies are headed from China in the next week, broadcaster YLE reports.

Lounema also noted that the supplier of the new equipment was not the same as the supplier of the faulty goods, but could not guarantee the new shipment would be able to pass the tests.

“Currently, the protection market is very chaotic compared to the normal situation when you know who you are dealing with and the products are internationally known brands. Right now, there is a very wide range of traders in the market,” Lounema said.

The Finnish case comes after several other countries have reported faulty medical equipment shipped to them from China, including in the Netherlands where authorities recalled 600,000 masks with defective filters.

Earlier this week, the Canadian city of Toronto recalled $200,000 worth of masks manufactured in China, 62,600 masks in total, due to “poor quality”.

Masks have not been the only faulty medical equipment shipped across the globe from China in recent weeks. Spain reported that the first batch of 9,000 coronavirus testing kits only worked 30 per cent of the time.

British authorities have complained of the same issue with testing kits they had ordered, with Public Health England’s Professor John Newton stating that millions of ordered test kits were “not good enough to be worth rolling out in very large scale”.

'Nothing Off the Table': Pentagon Won't Rule Out Reinstating Fired Navy Captain

The top Navy officer and defense secretary have the same message when it comes to Capt. Brett Crozier being reassigned to the job from which he was removed last week.

"We've taken nothing off the table."

That's what Defense Secretary Mark Esper told CBS News on Friday morning. On Thursday, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Michael Gilday also said he's open to reinstating Crozier as the commanding officer of the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt.

"I am taking no options off the table," Gilday told The Associated Press. The CNO hasn't spoken to Crozier, the outlet reported, and isn't facing pressure from anyone about the investigation.

Gilday "just wants to make sure his actions are fair," according to the AP.

The Navy has completed its investigation into Crozier, though the results have not been made public. Crozier was relieved of command April 2. That was after he sent a plea for help with a growing health crisis on his ship to several people outside his chain of command.

Since Crozier's warning, which came in the form of a four-page letter that was later published by the San Francisco Chronicle, nearly 10% of the Roosevelt's crew has tested positive for COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus.

Crozier is one of them. Another member was moved into an intensive care unit Thursday after being found unresponsive in Guam, where thousands of sailors have been moved off the ship to stem the spread of the virus among the crew.

The decision to remove Crozier from his position has been met with controversy. When Crozier left the ship, videos emerged of his crew applauding him, chanting the captain's name as he left.

Former Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly, who made the call, has since stepped down after he disparaged the ousted captain in a speech he gave to the crew days later. Modly flew to Guam to make the speech, which media outlets reported cost taxpayers more than $240,000. He resigned Tuesday following mounting pressure from lawmakers and others over his handling of the situation.

Esper told CBS his guidance to Gilday and the new acting Navy secretary, James McPherson, was to ensure no further action is taken against Crozier until after the service's investigation into his actions is complete.

"We'll see where that takes us," he said.

"What I look to do is hear from the chain of command," Esper added. "My inclination is always to support the chain of command and to take their recommendations seriously."

The defense secretary said he expects to hear the Navy's findings and recommendations "in the coming days."
