Learned about quinine as a kid watching the BBC docu-series Connections with James Burke

 

One epsidode was discussing searching malaria in the rubber plant plantations. People were searching for alternative to quinine to fight the malaria. One guy's work lead to creating an artificial dye (1840s).

 

That lead to to more chemical research for other dyes and compounds, creating a chemical ndustry boom by late 1800s. Part of the chemical industry work produced cheaper and safer gun cotton for munitions. Thus industry was in place to manufacture more munitions which helped prolong WWI.

 

miss good science shows like that, explaining how an idea or invention can effect something else unrelated and a chain reaction occurs.
