I was outright denied by store to pay by cash

Working today and I went to a service station (caltex) where I bought some drinks for the road. Cashier told me that they are no longer taking cash and that I have to pay by card. WTF? I asked him if this is for all of the franchises around Sydney and he said that a letter came from the top to the owners that they are to start phasing out cash payments. Cashier doesn't own the store but got those instructions from the owner and that basically owners can use their own discretion as to how they want to implement.

I also deliver to cafes and they too are starting to encourage customers to move away from paying cash and using card. Some of them even have signs up asking customers to use card and go cashless. Talking to the cafe owners they said it's just a result of the lock downs that they are going in that direction since their bank managers are telling them it's easier as P2P services are being reduced and online us the way to go not just now because of the virus but moving forward after things get back to so called normal.
