US coroanvirus: More than 2,000 US coronavirus deaths

were reported in a day. That's likely the peak death toll

expert says

"The US recorded at least 2,074 deaths Friday, the largest increase in coronavirus fatalities the country has seen since the beginning of the outbreak.

That brings the total number of reported deaths to 18,777. More than 501,560 people have tested positive, according to Johns Hopkins University's tally of cases in the US.

The country likely saw a peak in its daily death toll, according to Dr. Chris Murray, the director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington – who created the model the White House is using to gauge the peak of coronavirus cases.

"We re-run the model, basically, almost every night – and the new returns from different states are suggesting different peaks in different states, but at the national level we seem to be pretty much close to the peak," he said.

Bing COVID-19 tracker: Latest numbers by country and state

His team's model projects about 61,500 Americans will lose their lives to the virus by August – and that's if the country keeps social distance measures in place until the end of May. If they factor in states that may lift these rules by May 1, the numbers "don't look good,' Murray said.

Health experts say that while they're encouraged by signs that those measures are having a positive impact, they warn re-opening the country too quickly could set the US back."

Bill Maher blasts 'PC' uproar over 'Chinese virus' label

'We SHOULD blame China'

By Joseph A. Wulfsohn | Fox News

Published 3 hours ago

""Real Time" host Bill Maher slammed the "PC police" Friday night for overreacting to the "Chinese virus" labeling controversy.

As the coronavirus outbreak continued spreading across the U.S., President Trump and others sparked a national debate by referring to the disease as the "Chinese coronavirus" or the "Wuhan virus" because it began infecting people in Wuhan, China.

But critics of the labels called them "racist" and "xenophobic," insisting such terms would incite hate crimes against Asian-Amercans.

Maher mocked the complainers, listing several other illnesses that are named after their locations of origin – such as the West Nile virus, Spanish flu and MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome).

"You can't yell at someone for breaking a rule you just made up," he said, adding, "So why should China get a pass?""

Who will be winners and losers in new world order?

Are state responses to the virus shifting the balance of power between China and the west?

Sat 11 Apr 2020 02.00 EDT

"Andrà tutto bene, the Italians have taught us to think, but in truth, will everything be better the day after? It may seem premature, in the midst of what Emmanuel Macron has described as “a war against an invisible enemy”, to consider the political and economic consequences of a distant peace. Few attempt a definitive review of a play after the first three scenes.

Yet world leaders, diplomats and geopolitical analysts know they are living through epoch-making times and have one eye on the daily combat, the other on what this crisis will bequeath the world. Competing ideologies, power blocs, leaders and systems of social cohesion are being stress-tested in the court of world opinion.

Already everyone in the global village is starting to draw lessons. In France, Macron has predicted “this period will have taught us a lot. Many certainties and convictions will be swept away. Many things that we thought were impossible are happening. The day after when we have won, it will not be a return to the day before, we will be stronger morally. We will draw the consequences, all the consequences.” He has promised to start with major health investment. A Macronist group of MPs has already started a Jour d’Après website."

A plan to defeat coronavirus finally emerges, but it’s not from

the White House

Lena H. Sun, William Wan

"A national plan to fight the coronavirus pandemic in the United States and return Americans to jobs and classrooms is emerging — but not from the White House.

Instead, a collection of governors, former government officials, disease specialists and nonprofits are pursuing a strategy that relies on the three pillars of disease control: Ramp up testing to identify people who are infected. Find everyone they interact with by deploying contact tracing on a scale America has never attempted before. And focus restrictions more narrowly on the infected and their contacts so the rest of society doesn’t have to stay in permanent lockdown.

But there is no evidence yet the White House will pursue such a strategy.

Instead, the president and his top advisers have fixated almost exclusively on plans to reopen the U.S. economy by the end of the month, though they haven’t detailed how they will do so without triggering another outbreak. President Trump has been especially focused on creating a second coronavirus task force aimed at combating the economic ramifications of the virus.

Administration officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity to describe internal deliberations, say the White House has made a deliberate political calculation that it will better serve Trump’s interest to put the onus on governors — rather than the federal government — to figure out how to move ahead.

“It’s mind-boggling, actually, the degree of disorganization,” said Tom Frieden, former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director. The federal government has already squandered February and March, he noted, committing “epic failures” on testing kits, ventilator supply, protective equipment for health workers and contradictory public health communication. The next failure is already on its way, Frieden said, because “we’re not doing the things we need to be doing in April.”"

Japan starts 1st weekend under state of emergency as

infection cases soar in Tokyo

Today 05:45 pm JST

"Tokyo and six other prefectures entered their first weekend under a state of emergency on Saturday, with authorities strengthening calls for people to stay home and for nonessential businesses to temporarily shutter to curb the coronavirus' spread in Japan.

More than 190 new coronavirus cases were confirmed in Tokyo on Saturday, a record daily increase for the fourth straight day, a metropolitan government official said.

The figure topped the previous record of 189 marked Friday, bringing the total number of infections in the capital to about 1,900.

Areas around Shinjuku Station in Tokyo that are normally packed with shoppers appeared semi-deserted with department stores and restaurants closed for business.

"I came to the office because my work is piling up. It's the first time I've seen Shinjuku so empty on a weekend," said a Shinjuku Ward office employee in her 50s.

The lack of people in one of the Japanese capital's major transport hubs was further demonstrated by a timetable screen at the Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal which showed the majority of scheduled buses had vacant seats."

GEORGE PELL, CARDINAL ACQUITTED OF CHILD

SEXUAL ASSAULT, WRITES ABOUT SUFFERING IN

EASTER OP-ED

4/11/20 AT 4:12 AM EDT

"George Pell, the Australian cardinal acquitted of child sex abuse allegations, has written an Easter opinion piece exploring the topic of suffering.

Pell was found guilty of sexually abusing two boys in the 1990s, but was released from prison earlier in the week after Australia's High Court overturned the verdict. The cleric served 13 months of a six-year prison sentence.

The conviction made Pell the most senior member of the Catholic Church to be jailed for child sexual abuse. At the time, he was an adviser to Pope Francis and the Vatican treasurer. The cardinal had described the allegation as "a load of absolute and disgraceful rubbish.""
