Reminds me of this interesting article. Does the Queen Control Communist China? "Fairyland?"

Queen Elizabeth meets communist chief

PEKING – Britain's Queen Elizabeth II met China's leading statesman Deng Xiaoping for the first time today and sipped tea at a 'fairyland' lakeside pavilion with Communist Party chief Hu Yaobang.

'Thank you for coming to see an old man such as me,' Deng, 82, said after greeting the monarch and her husband Prince Philip at a courtyard in the Diaoyutai State guest house, a former imperial pleasure park in western Peking.

The meeting came on the third day of the queen's weeklong visit, the first visit to China by a British monarch.

'The weather in Peking is very good at the moment, but a little dry,' said Deng. 'It would be better if it were moist like the weather in London. When I was young, I heard about the fogs in London.

'I've been to Paris, and when I was there, I was told that from the top of the Eiffel Tower it is possible to see England. I went up the tower twice, but on both occasions the weather was very bad, so I couldn't see England,' the Chinese leader said.

'The Eiffel Tower is a very long way from England, and I don't think you would see it,' replied the queen, who was dressed in a lilac jacket with matching mid-length skirt and a diamond broach. The meeting was the first ever between Deng and the queen.

Earlier, the monarch was entertained by Communist Party chief Hu at the Zhongnanhai Compound, former home to Qing Dynasty nobles and now the center of power in the nation of 1 billion people.

'It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our country,' said Hu, who addressed the monarch as 'your majesty.' Hu met the queen on a visit to London in June.

Hu, who wore a brown Western-style suit, escorted the monarch and Prince Philip on a stroll beside the willow-fringed Zhongnanhai lake to the house where Mao Tse-tung lived. The edifice has been preserved as a memorial to the late chairman.

'That's fairyland,' Hu said as the party approached an ornate lakeside pavilion named Peng Lai, the abode of immortals, where waitresses in Chinese-style slit skirts served the dignitaries tea and confections.

Monday night, the queen was honored at a glittering banquet in the Great Hall of the People. Resplendent in a close-fitting, shimmering pink dress slit to the knee, Queen Elizabeth said in a toast that 'now I can see the reality of China far better than 10,000 words can tell.'

The bejeweled British monarch said ties between London and Peking have never been better.

'This owes much to the settlement worked out between us for the future of Hong Kong,' the queen said, referring to a 1984 pact that will see the British colony come under Chinese control in 1997.

About 400 people attended the banquet, dining on a seafood delicacy known as 'Buddha Leaping Over the Wall,' steamed mandarin fish, chicken soup with jasmine blossom and Dragon Eye wine.

Journalists were ordered out of the banquet, given by President Li Xiannian, before the queen picked up her chopsticks.
