A remake of 1984 movie "Red Dawn" has been altered, and members of the
Michigan militia aren't happy about it.
The new version - for which scenes were shot at Mt. Brighton Ski Area in
Genoa Township - was originally written as a story about Chinese forces
invading the United States. Now, it has been altered to make North Korea
the American enemy.
"The revamped remake is a "shadow of its former self" because it no longer includes an invading country that poses a clear danger to the United
States, said Mike Lackomar, Livingston County team leader for the Southeast Michigan Volunteer Militia.
Part of Saturday's Militia Field Day open house in Green Oak Township will include a protest of the new "Red Dawn" - a favorite among militiamen,
Lackomar said.
Lackomar called Chinese leaders "third world thugs" capable of providing
arms to U.S. enemies, and who have manipulated American currency to their benefit."
He said he believes Chinese government officials protested the original
theme of the remake and insisted on a change.
The theme change to "Red Dawn" is noted on the film's Internet Movie
Database entry. The film's official Web site only states "an American city
awakens to the surreal sight of foreign paratroopers dropping from the sky
-
shockingly, the U.S. has been invaded and their hometown is the initial
target."
The name of the enemy isn't listed.
The militiamen originally protested what they called the "suppressed release" of the new "Red Dawn" because its release had been put on hold
while MGM Studios was undergoing bankruptcy, Lackomar said."
"The original 1984 version of the film, in which Charlie Sheen starred, cast Soviet Union soldiers as the invading bad guys."
