"WASHINGTON, DC - In what appears to be a concerted attempt to divert blame from the Trump administration's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, Republican senators are ratcheting up support for claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that China and the World Health Organization are to blame.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a close confidant of Mr Trump, on Friday stoked the fire with a blistering attack on China, embellished with a threat to cancel U.S. debit with China, which if followed through would send shock waves through financial markets..

"The first thing I want to do is get the United States Senate on the record where we don't blame Trump , we blame China," he told Sean Hannity of Fox News.

"The Chinese government is responsible for 16,000 American deaths and seventeen million Americans being unemployed."

"It is the Chinese government and the way they behave that led to this pandemic," he said. "This is the third one to come out of China."

"I want to make our response to this so overwhelming that China will change its behavior," said Senator Graham."
