No— Through the lungs that's why they assume its respiratory– your blood cells have to reach the thin pneumocyte epithelium in order to retrieve oxygen, but they retrieve viral particles as well. The first symptoms of any note manifest in lungs which again confuses everyone into thinking respiratory.
To your point, this could be easily injected however.
deferiprone would only fix the iron overload— wouldn't solve the problem of blood cells with no iron, so you would still suffocate to death. Nice find however.
