Dangerous Storms with Tornadoes, Damaging Winds, Heavy Rain Underway in the South

At a Glance

A dangerous severe weather outbreak is expected into Monday.

The severe threat stretches from the lower Mississippi Valley to parts of the East Coast.

A number of tornadoes may be strong and have long tracks.

Widespread damaging wind gusts and large hail are also possible.

A threat for flooding rainfall is a concern as well.

A dangerous severe weather threat is underway in the South, and it will spread eastward throughout the region Sunday night into Monday morning. Strong tornadoes, widespread damaging winds, large hail and flooding rain could accompany these storms.

Happening Now

Strong to severe thunderstorms are moving eastward through the Southeast ahead of an upper-level storm system.

 

NOAA's Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued the following severe weather watches:

 

-A tornado watch valid until 8 p.m. CDT for far southeastern Arkansas, northeastern Louisiana and northern and central Mississippi. This watch area includes Jackson, Greenville and Tupelo, Mississippi. This is a particularly dangerous situation (PDS) tornado watch, which means several strong tornadoes are likely, in addition to widespread damaging winds and large hail, according to the SPC.

 

-A tornado watch valid until 12 a.m. CDT for central and southern Alabama and southeastern Mississippi. This watch area includes Birmingham, Montgomery and Mobile, Alabama. This is a particularly dangerous situation (PDS) tornado watch, which means several strong tornadoes are likely, in addition to widespread damaging winds and large hail, according to the SPC.

 

-A tornado watch valid until 8 p.m. CDT for south-central and eastern Louisiana and southern Mississippi. This watch area includes Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

 

-A tornado watch valid until 10 p.m. CDT for northern and central Alabama and far southern Middle Tennessee. This watch area includes Birmingham, Huntsville and Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

 

-A tornado watch valid until 11 p.m. EDT for northwestern Georgia. This watch area includes Rome, Georgia.

 

-A severe thunderstorm watch valid until 8 p.m. CDT for far southwestern Arkansas, southeastern Oklahoma and northeastern Texas. This watch area includes McAlester, Oklahoma, and Texarkana, Arkansas.

 

-A severe thunderstorm watch valid until 11 p.m. CDT much of Arkansas and northern Louisiana. This watch area includes Little Rock, Arkansas, and Shreveport, Louisiana.
