The whole world rejected God at some point.
For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10 as it is written:
“None is righteous, no, not one;

no one seeks for God.
12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
no one does good,
not even one.”
13 “Their throat is an open grave;
they use their tongues to deceive.”

The Righteousness of God Through Faith
21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. That's not blood magic. That's atonement. The debt of sin (wrongdoing is death). The picture of this in the old testament is showing innocent animals dying. This was a reflection of the spritual reality, a reminder. One day, God would send His son a sacrifice, and would would die for all and paid their debts, atone for their sin. God poured out all wrath on Jesus. But because had no sin in Him, He rose again, because death had no claim on Him and God glorifies Him before all. In believing in Him, asking for forgiveness and accepting this gift that this salvation, redeeming is for us, we become co-inheritors with Jesus, to be in God's presence again, be free of death consequences, and truly live now and forever.
Jesus also calls Himself the bread of life and the living water, which if you drink of you will never be thirsty again. But He is talking about spiritual life and realities.
This picture also would have made sense to the culture of the time and God approached humans in ideas that they could understand.
People who worshiped other gods and idols sacrificed children for temporary power that demons would give them with their spiritual power.
In the old testament we get the picture again. When God says to Abraham take your son to the mountain (mountains are places where God touches the earth), to sacrifice him. God stops him and brings a goat, and tells him that he won't have to sacrifice his child. God's people are never to sacrifice their children. (But one day God would send His Son to paid the price for justice.
The gods/idols/demons promoted cannibalism etc. but God's answer is in a different way, there will be no cannibalism, but to take part in Jesus' blessings. We are to become the children of God.
The food and drink He speaks of is real but real spiritually.
