Review who the enemies are.

Google - Android

Microsoft - server and client

Facebook - social media

Etc.

Most of us avoided Win10 like the plague. So we do not know, or have missed the subtle changes. Windows (and I believe many other MS systems, now) operate on a subscription key. Every 30 days, Windows goes online to download a cryptography key that works as a sort of second factor for its authentication system. Take a Windows machine offline long enough… And it self-de-activates.

Annoying for the home user and somewhat of a torpedo for business…. But the real issue is servers and applications. Now, true, few servers use Windows as their platform… But which ones do? What routing nodes may be affected by either a court freeze of MS/related… Or a vengeful act by the same companies?

Remember done in 30?

I have no evidence… But what if that point marks the start of MS and others not issuing new subscription keys for their services… Which will time-out on that 30 day marker and attempt to hold the world hostage as they are threatened in courts?

You may have a Linux computer that works fine. But the servers you use to make long overland hops use…? How many services are dependent on Google or Facebook for login/verification?

A company I know is looking to use Google for part of a 2factor authentication system. What happens of a court decision or the will of Google suspends that service?

Why were these boards chosen? Numerous reasons… But not the least of which is the simplicity of these boards and their survivability. These are the walkie-talkies of the internet and the format can be replicated to a peer-to-peer failsafe network. The CB or …maybe ham radio of the times.
