I dont think even after looking into it here and there, we truly know what it is that they were doing there.

We've speculated and theorized but dont really know for sure.

And there is more than just one, and they are all around the planet.

If I had to take a wild guess, I would say opening doorways, creating worlds, and collapsing others, and possibly even moving our existence with it while doing so.
