Regarding your correspondence, I believe the easiest and best way to reduce gun violence and ensure the safety of our communities is to fully enforce the existing laws. Current law already prohibits engaging in the business of selling firearms without possessing a federal firearms license and running background checks, including sales completed over the internet and at gun shows. At its core, the Second Amendment helps ensure that individuals and local communities can serve as the first line of defense against threats to our persons and property. Any legislation that would restrict our basic right to self-defense deserves serious and open debate, and that is exactly what I will do regarding such legislation. I appreciate your thoughts on this important issue.
