Oh My: WHO Director Was Exposed for Covering Up Epidemics…in 2017

The World Health Organization has come under increased scrutiny in recent months for its handling of the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic. Last night, Taiwan health officials released an email showing they warned the global organization the disease was spreading human-to-human in December. They also asked for cooperation and information. Led by Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO ignored the warnings on behalf of China and continued for weeks to regurgitate Chinese Communist Party propaganda about the virus. WHO officials also roundly criticized the United States for implementing a travel ban to and from the country.

But it turns out Dr. Ghebreyesus, who was heavily backed by China during his pursuit of his current WHO position, has a history of covering up pandemics. From a March 2017 New York Times article:

A leading candidate to head the World Health Organization was accused this week of covering up three cholera epidemics in his home country, Ethiopia, when he was health minister — a charge that could seriously undermine his campaign to run the agency. The accusation against Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was made by a prominent global health expert who is also an informal adviser to Dr. David Nabarro, a rival candidate in the race for W.H.O. director general.

During a briefing with reporters at the White House last week, President Trump heavily criticized the WHO for "blowing it" and announced a freeze on funding for the organization. Dr. Ghebreyesus responded with somewhat of a threat. "If you don't want many more body bags, then you refrain from politicizing it," he said. Dr. Ghebreyesus made the accusation of "politicization" against President Trump after deeply engaging in politics on behalf of China and against Taiwan. The results have been fatal and economically devastating for millions of people around the world.

CNN panelist taunts Trump supporters: Now YOUR loved ones can die

David Zurawik, a media critic for the Baltimore Sun, appeared on CNN’s “Reliable Sources,” where he told Trump supporters, “Now your loved ones can die.” Zurawik made the comments on Easter Sunday, seemingly distraught over the president’s keeping the American people apprised of developments in the battle against COVID-19 through his daily press briefings. “Health workers are risking their lives daily,” he said. And to see him [Trump] come out there and for 90 minutes, and two hours … spinning a narrative,” as though every word the president uttered was demonstrably false. Zurawik continued foaming at the mouth over Trump’s press conferences, calling the information provided an “outrageous lie. People are dying because of his foolishness,” he went on to claim. “It’s really foolishness at this point.”

Then Zurawik lost control entirely, effectively cursing everyone who voted for Trump. Zurawik’s comments were reminiscent of those made by Jennifer Rubin, the Washington Post’s “conservative” columnist, who claimed the coronavirus would kill more Republicans than Democrats. “There is a particular cruelty – irony – that it is their core viewers, the Republican older viewers, who are the most at risk,” Rubin said. “I hate to put it this way, but there will be less [sic] Democrat deaths because there will be less [sic] mass gatherings. …” Despite Zurawik’s fervent desire to see Trump banished from the airwaves, that doesn’t appear to be in the offing. A recent poll shows that more than three-quarters of Americans find his briefings “helpful and informative,” including 62% of Democrats.

Rita Wilson Shares How She and Tom Hanks Contracted Coronavirus, "Extreme" Chloroquine Side Effects

The actress and singer offered an update on her and her husband's condition more than a month after they both tested positive, and explained the origins of her "Hip Hop Hooray" remix and how it's being used to raise money for relief efforts. Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks were two of the first Hollywood stars to reveal publicly that they had tested positive for the coronavirus, sharing their diagnosis over a month ago. Since then, they have offered numerous updates as they recovered while isolated in Australia, where they had traveled for work, and returned home to the U.S. While Hanks hosted a remote edition of Saturday Night Live just days ago, Wilson spoke to CBS This Morning host Gayle King on Tuesday's edition of the show, opening up about how she contracted COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, as well as what her experience was like while she was sick and how she's trying to help in the fight against the global pandemic.

Wilson said that as she came down with the disease, she was "very tired, extremely achy, felt uncomfortable, didn't want to be touched," had a fever that reached 102 degrees by day nine, got chills and lost her sense of taste and smell. Hanks, she said, didn't have as high of a fever and didn't lose his sense of taste and smell. Wilson added that she was given the controversial drug chloroquine, saying she was not sure if it worked or if it was just time for her fever to break, as that's what happened after she was given the drug. Still, she cautioned that she experienced "extreme side effects" after taking chloroquine including being "completely nauseous," having vertigo, and her muscles becoming very weak. "I think people have to be very considerate about that drug," Wilson said. "We don't really know if it's helpful in this case."

Chloroquine, typically prescribed to treat malaria, and a newer, similar drug, hydroxychloroquine, have been touted by President Trump and others as effective treatments against the virus based on some small, early tests. But medical experts have cautioned that more scientific evidence is needed, and they have pointed to potentially dangerous side effects of the medicine. Indeed, on Monday, scientists in Brazil stopped a chloroquine study after heart-rhythm problems developed in one-quarter of people given the higher of two doses being tested. As for how she and Hanks contracted the virus, Wilson said they were told it was from someone they were both exposed to at the same time, but they don't know where or when that happened. None of their close family contacts or members of their work team tested positive.

Australian officials said shortly after the pair were diagnosed that Hanks and Wilson were believed to have contracted the coronavirus in the U.S. or in transit from there as, at the time, all new reported infections were non-contact cases. The pair had been in Australia for at least a week prior to their diagnosis. Hanks was there to film Baz Luhrmann's Elvis Presley film for Warner Bros., production on which has since been suspended, and Wilson accompanied him, performing concerts featuring songs from her new album, Halfway to Home.

Inside Huawei’s D.C. Influence Campaign

Former cybersecurity officials cash checks from Chinese company tied to 5G spying fears

Former Florida congressman Cliff Stearns once spearheaded Congress's response to the risks that plague the nation's information infrastructure, using his influence to warn Americans about the "increased possibility of a devastating cyberattack." Now, he is among the growing number of former U.S. cyber and national security officials who have worked for a Chinese tech giant widely seen as the leading cybersecurity threat in the world. Huawei, China's leading provider of 5G infrastructure, claims to be a private company that is independent from the Chinese government. But intelligence officials across the globe believe that the company can serve as a conduit for Chinese espionage, which has prompted American allies such as the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia to restrict or prohibit the firm from operating within their borders. In the United States, Huawei was indicted in January 2019 and American companies were prohibited from doing business with the firm.

In response, Huawei has launched a two-pronged, multimillion-dollar offensive to assuage the concerns of policymakers and the public, hiring an army of D.C. insiders like Stearns, whose work with Huawei spanned from 2014 to 2018, to convince Congress and the White House to relax sanctions and pouring more than $1 million into advertorials in major outlets, including the New York Times. Experts say that existing laws prohibit Huawei employees and lobbyists from divulging explicitly classified information to their employers. But Scott Amey, general counsel at the Project on Government Oversight, warned that companies like Huawei hire former officials explicitly because they offer unparalleled access to stakeholders and information. "Hiring former senior officials as lobbyists provides access to decision-makers and information—two things that go a long way in navigating swampy government agencies and getting results that benefit their clients," Amey said. "Huawei is spending millions each quarter to protect business opportunities here, and influence peddlers are more than happy to cash in." Huawei did not respond to a request for comment.

Huawei's lobbying campaign is similar to those conducted by several other Chinese tech firms that are also considered national security threats or human rights violators. ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, has also spent roughly $270,000 since July 2019 to hire several former U.S. officials as lobbyists even as concerns mount about its relationship with the Chinese government. The Chinese telecommunications company ZTE was removed from a federal sanction list after spending millions on a lobbying campaign spearheaded by former Obama administration official Angela Simpson and former Democratic Senate aide Peter Ruffo. Neither Simpson nor Ruffo responded to a request for comment. Stearns's lobbying firm, APCO Worldwide LLC, helped to advance Huawei's priorities on the Hill beginning in 2010, pushing to expand the company's access to American telecommunications networks. APCO's relationship with Huawei ended in 2019, but the tech giant has cultivated new relationships with D.C. insiders and former national security officials.

They include Samir Jain, an attorney who served as the senior director for cybersecurity policy at the National Security Council in the Obama administration. Huawei's retention of Jain and his law firm, Jones Day, in March 2019 was widely criticized as an example of D.C. swampiness. Jones Day has brought in at least $60,000 from Huawei since then, according to data from ProPublica. The company has also retained as its chief security officer Andy Purdy, who ran the Department of Homeland Security's National Cyber Security Division (NCSD) in the George W. Bush administration. During Purdy's tenure, the NCSD was responsible for assessing cybersecurity threats.

WHO Blocked Doctors From Urging Border Controls To Stop Spread Of COVID-19

The World Health Organization blocked doctors from urging countries to impose border controls to stop the spread of coronavirus, it has been revealed. While the organization was demanding countries impose zero border controls, it was also campaigning against the profiling of international travelers in order to prevent the “stigmatization” of Chinese people (hurt feelings). We first reported on the WHO telling countries not to impose travel bans back at the end of January, when the organization released a statement urging against “any travel or trade restriction” while demanding countries not engage in “discrimination” in their handling of the coronavirus outbreak. In early February, Director-General of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus re-iterated this in a statement in which he said that travel restrictions “can have the effect of increasing fear and stigma.” Right up until the end of February, the WHO continued “to advise against the application of travel or trade restrictions to countries experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks,” despite the rapid spread of the disease. It has now been revealed that medical experts who were urging countries to impose border controls were silenced.

“[WHO] actually decided not to go ahead with [travel ban recommendations] and not declare a global health emergency but there were a few dissenting voices,” reported Sky News Australia. “So the official meeting records say there was a divergence of views but they won’t actually go into detail about who was trying to block it. But there were doctors there who wanted to issue travel bans and the World Health Organization blocked it.” The effort to silence medical professionals from urging countries to enact travel bans was made on January 30 during a meeting of WHO bureaucrats and health experts in Geneva, Switzerland. A Mount Sinai study found that New York City’s record-high coronavirus cases and deaths were “predominately” due to travel from Europe, meaning that many more lives could have been saved if borders had been closed down earlier. But instead, the WHO insisted that maintaining the globalist principle of the international traffic of people was more important than stopping a global pandemic.
