Border Patrol Agent Sets Off Armed Standoff with Cops Arresting Him for Raping Children

Sierra Vista, AZ — In case after infuriating case, TFTP has reported on cops showing up to situations in which citizens are in need of help only to kill those citizens instead of helping them. However, when cops show up to situations involving fellow law enforcement who have flown off the handle, armed themselves and refuse to come out — even child raping ones — amazingly enough, they somehow resolve them without killing anyone. Case in point: a child rapist border patrol agent was taken in peacefully last week after an armed standoff with police.

On Friday, authorities in Sierra Vista, reported that 49-year-old Dana Thornhill had been arrested after an hours-long armed standoff with police. He was wanted on multiple counts of child rape for allegedly sexually abusing children over the course of several years.

According to the Arizona Republic, Lt. Sean Brownson, the department spokesman, said officers, working jointly with Homeland Security Investigations, had been surveilling Thornhill for some time and suspected that he was involved in the “continuous” abuse of multiple children in Sierra Vista.

Although Brownson didn’t get into the details of Thornhill’s abuse, he told the press that law enforcement had no choice but to move in to arrest this alleged predator because his law enforcement status made him a threat to the community.

“We felt strongly at this time that he should not be walking the streets based on what types of crimes he had committed, the sexual assaults on children, and then the fact that they were continuous over multiple years,” Brownson said.

As the Republic reports, Sierra Vista police declined to release information about the ages or the number of victims, citing the sensitive nature of the investigation. The department said the crimes under investigation now took place within the city limits.

According to the department, somehow Thornhill became aware that police were investigating him for the sexual abuse of children.

“It became pretty apparent that he was aware that law enforcement was watching him, and he was concerned that he was going to get arrested,” Brownson said.

Small Business Bailout Fund To Run Out Of Money Today

With millions in small business owners still waiting for their bank to get back to them on the status of their business continuity loan/grant application, it appears that some applicants have been more equal than others, and according to the Journal, the small-business loan program also known as the Paycheck Protection Program - which now finds itself at the center of a clash between congressional Democrats and Republicans - is expected to run out of money later Wednesday.

Negotiations between Congress and the White House, which reportedly resumed Wednesday over replenishing the small-business loan program designed to support businesses hit by the coronavirus pandemic, will take on a new urgency after the program is expected to exhaust its initial allocation of $350 billion as early as the close of business today. As of Wednesday morning, the Small Business Administration said it had approved about 1.3 million applications, totaling more than $289 billion in loans.

While both Democrats and Republicans want to add $250 billion to the small-business aid program, the two parties have been sparring for days over whether to add restrictions to the funds. As reported previously, Democrats want to expand access to the loans as well as include more money for hospitals, food assistance and state and local governments. Republicans, on the other hand, said they want to keep the bill focused on increasing small-business aid and defer other funding debates until the next, broader legislation is crafted.

And so the political buck-passing continues: top Senate Democrate Chuck Schumer told reporters he had spoken with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin Wednesday morning and that both House and Senate Democratic staff were expected to meet with officials from Mr. Mnuchin’s office later in the day.

“We see no reason why we can’t come to an agreement,” Mr. Schumer said. "We Democrats believe we need more money for small businesses, but we need it to go to the people who are under banked and underserved.”

As the WSJ added, the discussions were the first signs of progress this week, but it remains uncertain whether congressional leaders and President Trump will be able to reach an agreement by week’s end. Both chambers are scheduled to hold brief sessions later this week.

UK: Border force brings another 72 boat migrants to shore

Four boats carrying 72 illegal migrants were brought to Dover on Sunday after the UK Border force intercepted them in the English Channel.

The first two boats which carried 22 men and eight women claiming to be Iraqi, Iranian, and Syrian nationals was intercepted by the Border Force and partnering agencies at 6:30 am. Three hours later, another RHIB (rigid-hulled inflatable boat) carrying 13 men who claimed to be from Iraq and Iran was intercepted, Kent Online reports.

Shortly after, the fourth boat which carried 25 men and four women who presented themselves as Iranian and Iraqi was intercepted as it approached a beach in Hastings.

All of illegal migrants were then taken to Dover where their medical conditions were assessed by healthcare personnel.

The news comes after a total of 116 illegal migrants were intercepted while crossing the Channel on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week.

In response to the illegal crossings, Tony Eastaugh, the Home Office’s director for crime and enforcement, said: “Those facilitating these illegal crossings and the criminals behind this trade are breaking the law. If someone facilitates an illegal crossing, we will enforce the law and seek to return those with no right to be in the UK.”

“We are working around the clock each day with the NCA (National Crime Agency) and French law enforcement agencies to arrest and dismantle organised crime gangs in France,” Eastaugh said, adding that extra police patrols were being deployed to French beaches.

Andrew Cuomo Orders New Yorkers to Wear Masks in Public

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday ordered New Yorkers to wear a mask in public during the coronavirus crisis at his daily press conference.

“All people in public must have a mask and nose covering and they must wear it in a situation where you cannot or are not maintaining social distancing,” he said.

Cuomo said he would issue an executive order on Wednesday, with a three-day notice to allow progress. The order goes into effect on Friday.

The governor said that it was fine for New Yorkers to go out for a walk but that they had no right to infect other individuals.

“Put the mask on when you are not in socially distant places,” he said, citing trips on the bus and subway or passing people on the sidewalk when six feet of distancing could not be achieved.

“You must wear a mask, or cloth or an attractive bandanna,” Cuomo said.

Cuomo said he would not level a civil penalty for not wearing as mask, but hoped that New Yorkers would follow his order.

“We’re not there yet,” he said. “I hope New Yorkers do it because it makes sense.”

Police State: British Cops Call For the Right to Invade Private Homes to Bust up Gatherings

British police are calling for expanded powers to enforce the coronavirus lockdown rules, including the authority to forcefully enter private residences suspected of hosting forbidden gatherings.

Under the current law, the police only have the right to enter a private residence with a warrant, or with the permission of its occupant, or in active pursuit of a suspected criminal, or to investigate a disturbance, or if they hear cries for help. However, the Police Federation of England and Wales is seeking draconian unprecedented powers from the government to allow them to enter citizens’ homes without a warrant to stop suspected house parties during the coronavirus pandemic.

“We have asked they consider giving us powers around private gatherings or gatherings in a private dwelling. We have no right to enter a property and say: stop having a party,” a police federation source told The Telegraph.

“Some officers are having to work round it using other legislation that wasn’t designed for it,” the source added.

Law enforcement offices across the country have been flooded with reports of house parties from neighbours, with Greater Manchester Police disclosing that they received 494 reports from residents of suspected parties during the first week of the national lockdown.

Home Secretary Priti Patel is expected to block the request for warrantless searches of households. Ms Patel has called on police to refrain from adopting a “heavy-handed” approach to enforcing the lockdown.

“It would be a really big step for policing in this country that isn’t needed at this point,” a source inside the Home Office told The Telegraph. The source added: “If there are people at parties or BBQs the police can issue the fixed penalty notice as they travel to or from the party.”

The British government did permit a change to the Air Navigation Order of 2016, easing restrictions on the police’s ability to use drones as a means of dispersing illegal gatherings and spreading messages of health warnings. A similar move has already been implemented in France, Italy, Spain, Israel, and China.

Last month, Derbyshire Police was widely criticised after they posted a video of a police drone informing dog-walkers in the Peak District to go home as exercising in a park was “not essential”.

In response to the updated drone guidelines, the director of Big Brother Watch Silkie Carlo told The Times: “Drones are an extreme, militaristic form of surveillance. We’ve seen too many examples of police using them aggressively in place of measured public health communications.”

“Police using drones to surveil and bark orders at members of the public is usually excessive and counterproductive. Parliament should introduce stronger safeguards to circumscribe their use,” she added.

British Newspaper Finally Stops Publishing Paid Propaganda from the Chinese Communist Party

A leading British newspaper has decided to stop running paid propaganda articles from a mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) amidst a global effort by the regime in Beijing to influence Western opinion on the Wuhan virus pandemic.

The Daily Telegraph has removed its longstanding ‘China Watch’ section, which the paper has run for over ten years. The segment featured propaganda articles from the Chinese state-sponsored media outlet China Daily. Another part which ran articles from the People’s Daily, the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, has been removed as well.

According to The Guardian, some examples of articles that have since been deleted by the paper include: “Why are some framing China’s heroic efforts to stop coronavirus as inhumane?”; “Traditional Chinese medicine ‘helps fight coronavirus'”; and “Coronavirus outbreak is not an opportunity to score points against China”.

The Telegraph reportedly earned £750,000 per year to run the China Watch communist propaganda pieces. The paper did not give a reason for deleting the section. However, it comes as British officials have expressed concern the communist nation is spreading disinformation online to mislead Western audiences during the coronavirus pandemic.

Other Western newspapers including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal have all run paid articles from China Daily in the past. The New York Times said that it had discontinued the section earlier this year after its editorial board decided “to stop accepting branded content ads from state-run media, which includes China Daily”.

In March, the same American three papers were all banned from reporting inside China by the government in Beijing during the height of the coronavirus crisis.

13 Gulf Cartel Gunmen Arrested, One Killed in Mexican Border State Clash

SAN FERNANDO, Tamaulipas – Mexican military forces arrested 13 Gulf Cartel gunmen and killed another during a recent large-scale shootout south of the border with Texas. Several SUVs with shooters carrying machine guns, grenades, and other high-powered weapons took part in the clash.

The shootout took place earlier this week in the municipality of San Fernando, near the Carboneras community, when a squad of Marines encountered a cartel convoy, a statement from the Mexican Navy explained.

The gunmen and the military clashed for close to an hour. Authorities were forced to call air support from a Blackhawk helicopter. One gunman died. Government forces managed to arrest 13 and seized two SUVs with weapons.

Breitbart Texas consulted with Mexican law enforcement sources, who say the gunmen were part of the Matamoros faction of the Gulf Cartel. In recent days, that faction, led by Evaristo “El Vaquero” Cruz, clashed with rivals from the Gulf Cartel faction in Reynosa known as “Metros.” Though the factions have been at odds for several months, the two escalated their fight for San Fernando and its drug trafficking routes in recent days.

El Vaquero led a social media effort to show himself in a positive light by having his gunmen hand out hundreds of food baskets in the rural communities around Matamoros and in Ciudad Victoria. The Gulf Cartel pushed photographs to local news outlets and social media influencers to pose as champions for the poor.

Police department reminds residents to wear pants while checking mailbox

Feeling a bit lazy these days? Have you forgotten what it's like, with all of this ongoing coronavirus business, to go outside and be among fellow humans?

Well apparently, some folks over in Maryland are getting a little too comfortable in their quarantine clothes (or lack thereof).

The police in Taneytown, a small town in the northern part of the state, felt it necessary to remind residents via Facebook to put on some pants, at least before they step outside and check the mail.

The Taneytown PD's post, which appeared on Tuesday, reads, "Please remember to put pants on before leaving the house to check your mailbox. You know who you are. This is your final warning."

The message got quite the reaction, being shared more than 1,000 times within hours of posting.

Best Buy announces furloughs for 51,000 workers, CEO to forgo 50% of salary

Wednesday, Best Buy announced a number of measures it has taken in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, including temporarily furloughing workers.

According to a news release from the company, the company is set to furlough nearly 51,000 hourly store employees. Those employees will be able to retain their health benefits for a minimum of three months.

The company said most of the furloughed retail workers are part-time employees and that it would retain roughly 82% of its full-time store and field employees.

A number of corporate employees will also participate in voluntary reduced work weeks, as well a voluntary furloughs.

Those measures are set to begin Sunday.

It was also announced that CEO Corie Barry will forego 50% of her base salary. The company's board of directors will also forego 50 percent of their cash retainer fees through Sept. 1.

Low vitamin D levels linked to acute respiratory distress syndrome

When we hear about coronavirus deaths, a lot of them are being linked to a condition known as acute respiratory distress syndrome, or ARDS. While many COVID-19 patients do end up making a full recovery, those who have the misfortune of developing ARDS could lose their life. And while doctors are still trying to determine exactly why some patients are faring far better than others with the virus, some studies have already shown that ARDS is linked to low levels of vitamin D.

One study, which was peer reviewed and published in the journal Critical Care, looked at lung epithelial cells in a lab as well as animals and humans in clinical settings. They determined that a dietary-induced vitamin D deficiency led to lung inflammation and damage. In the clinical study, all of the patients who suffered from ARDS were found to have a vitamin D deficiency, which is defined as blood levels that are less than 50 nmol/L.

Moreover, patients with extremely low levels of vitamin D – which was defined as being below 8 ng/mL – had a 3.5 times greater likelihood of developing ARDS than people whose levels were above 8. Thankfully, correcting their vitamin D levels reduced the lung damage and led to improved survival rates.

Plenty of reasons to keep your vitamin D levels in check

While that’s a very compelling reason for you to ensure you’re getting plenty of vitamin D, it isn’t the only one. A vitamin D deficiency can also raise your risk of suffering from a viral or bacterial infection. It can also increase the risk of mortality in people who have pneumonia.

There’s even evidence that having reduced levels of vitamin D can raise your risk of developing pneumonia and breast cancer. Having optimal vitamin D levels has the opposite effect, however; levels of 55 ng/ml or higher can actually drop your risk of all cancers by as much as 35 percent.

Ensuring you get enough vitamin D

While levels of vitamin D that are higher than 20 ng/mL are considered adequate, many experts suggest aiming for even higher numbers. One study from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, for example, suggested that the minimum levels for enjoying the vitamin’s protective health benefits are 60 ng/mL.

Vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin because spending some time in the sun tells your body to create it. That’s why exposure to direct sunlight without any sunscreen on is the best way to get it. Although the precise amount you need will depend on where you live, the cloud cover that day, your natural skin tone and other factors, 20 minutes of exposure around two or three times per week is a good goal in general.

US and Israel team up to thwart war crimes probes

The US secretary of state’s threats to sanction two employees working for the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court and their families last month may have been the opening salvoes of a new US-Israel war against the justice body in The Hague.

Both states currently face the embarrassing specter of war crimes investigations by the court – an unprecedented challenge to their impunity. In response, they aim to disempower the court by preventing it from exercising jurisdiction in countries that are not state parties to the Rome Statute, the treaty on which the court was founded.

Should the US and Israel succeed, it would be a significant blow to the court’s independent mandate and purpose as a court of last resort for the victims of the world’s worst human rights abusers.

Their case rests mainly on the uncontested fact that the ICC does not have universal jurisdiction – meaning that not anyone can be brought before it, specifically non-parties to the Rome Statute.

The US and Israel are not among the 123 members of the ICC. But the Rome Statute does allow for the prosecution of states for alleged crimes perpetrated in territories where the court has jurisdiction.

Afghanistan – where the ICC chief prosecutor has recommended war crimes investigations that could potentially see the indictment of US officials – acceded to the Rome Statute in 2003.

The State of Palestine acceded to the Rome Statute in January 2015, accepting the jurisdiction of the court over alleged crimes committed in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

But the State of Palestine is not able to exercise sovereignty in those territories, which have been under military occupation by Israel since their seizure during the 1967 War. Israel vehemently rejects court jurisdiction in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Challenge to ICC jurisdiction

Palestinians working with the court and human rights groups say that the State of Palestine’s status as a party to the Rome Statute makes it an open and shut case for court jurisdiction in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

But because of what she calls “unique and highly contested legal and factual issues attaching to this situation, namely, the territory within which the investigation may be conducted,” Fatou Bensouda, the ICC chief prosecutor, has opened the court’s scope of territorial jurisdiction up for debate. She requested that a pre-trial panel of judges rule on the matter as a precondition to a formal investigation.

The application of court jurisdiction over non-state parties was rejected by the US, the world’s sole superpower, when the Rome Statute was being negotiated ahead of its adoption in 1998.

Israel, meanwhile, voted against the Rome Statute because it includes the transfer of populations into occupied territory among the list of “the most heinous and grievous war crimes.”

Israel’s transfer of its civilian population into West Bank settlements is expected to be a primary focus of any formal investigation the ICC may bring.

Microsoft April 2020 Patch Tuesday comes with fixes for three zero-days

Microsoft fixes another 113 bugs this month after patching a whopping 115 last month.

Microsoft has published today its monthly roll-up of security updates known as Patch Tuesday.

This month's updates are a bulky release. The OS maker has made available patches today for 113 vulnerabilities across 11 products, including three zero-day bugs that were being actively exploited in the wild.

As always, details remain scant for the time being. Details about zero-day attacks are usually kept under wraps for days or weeks, to give users time to patch and prevent attackers from developing proof-of-concept code.

The three zero-days patched this month are:

CVE-2020-1020 - A vulnerability in the Windows Adobe Type Manager Library lets attacker run code on vulnerable systems. Attacks can be executed remotely. The zero-day does not impact Windows 10. Details about this zero-day became public last month, but a patch was only released today. Read more in our previous coverage here.

CVE-2020-0938 - This is a second bug in the same Windows Adobe Type Manager Library. Bug somewhat similar to the one above, but its existence was disclosed only today, unlike the first one. The Microsoft mitigations published last month, if applied, also blocked attacks exploiting this second bug.

CVE-2020-1027 - A bug in the Windows kernel lets attackers elevate privileges to run code with kernel access.

CVE-2020-0968 - A bug in the Internet Explorer scripting engine can allow attackers to take control of a remote system. After this article went live, Microsoft issued a correction on the CVE-2020-0968 security advisory to update its exploitation status. This bug has not been exploited in the wild before, hence, it is not a zero-day. Article content and title updated accordingly.

According to Microsoft, the first three zero-days were discovered and reported by Google's two security teams – Project Zero and the Threat Analysis Group (TAG).

Lacking any other details, it is currently unclear if the three zero-days have been used by the same threat actor, or in the same hacking campaign.

Since Patch Tuesday updates are delivered in bulk, installing today's updates fixes all three zero-days at once, along with the 109 other security bugs.

Ex-professor, plague expert in jail for alleged sex-murder fantasy, asked for release to help with coronavirus

A former Northwestern University professor in jail for allegedly carrying out a sex-murder fantasy asked for his release on bail to help fight coronavirus.

Wyndham Lathem, 45, spent his time in academia researching the bubonic and pneumonic plagues and argued Friday that he could help with COVID-19 research.

But the judge denied Lathem’s release on $1 million bail. In addition to his plague-related research experience, Lathem argued for his release by saying that he has additional conditions that make him more likely to die if infected by coronavirus.

Lathem has been held without bail since August 2017, when he was arrested and charged with the murder of his boyfriend at the time, Trenton Cornell-Duranleau.

Cornell-Duranleau’s body was found stabbed more than 40 times in Lathem’s apartment, police say. Cops have described the crime as a premeditated sex-murder fantasy.

After fleeing Chicago and launching a nationwide manhunt, alongside alleged accomplice and University of Oxford employee Andrew Warren, Lathem turned himself in to police in Oakland, Calif.

He has since been held at Cook County Jail in Chicago. Currently, like the rest of the world, the jail is dealing with an outbreak of COVID-19. Two prisoners have died from the disease and more than 300 have tested positive.

Joker star Joaquin Phoenix urges New York gov. Andrew Cuomo to release prisoners amid fears over the spread of coronavirus among inmates

Oscar winning Hollywood actor Joaquin Phoenix has called on New York State to release some of its prisoners because of the coronavirus.

In a video shared on Twitter by the 'Release Aging People in Prison Campaign', the 'Joker' star, 45, speaks to camera about why he feels its important to release prisoners.

In the video, he says the spread of the coronavirus in U.S. prisons is a threat to everyone in the country.

The tweet began: 'A message from Oscar award-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix,' who in the video says: 'I'm calling on governor Andrew Cuomo to take action in New York by granting clemency to New Yorkers in prison.

'The lives of so many people depend on his action. No one deserves to die in prison from COVID-19.'

New York's constitution gives the governor the power to grant clemency to any person in the state's prison system, meaning that Cuomo could reduce a sentence or grant release for any prisoner if he chose to.
