Cold, ice lead to 60-car pileup on Chicago expressway
April 15 (UPI) – Traffic accidents caused a 60-vehicle pileup on Chicago's icy Kennedy Expressway Wednesday that sent more than a dozen people to the hospital.
Officials said 14 people were seriously hurt and dozens more received minor injuries. A layer of ice covered the roadway before dawn after temperatures dropped into the 20s overnight.
"Vehicles driving at high rates of speed caused the accident," said Chicago Deputy Fire Chief John Giordano. "It caused an effect where vehicles couldn't stop behind them because of the high speeds they were traveling."
The Illinois State Police reported at least 15 accidents Wednesday on Interstates 57, 55, 290, 80 and 94.

German lawyer sent to PSYCHIATRIC WARD after mounting serious resistance to ‘unconstitutional’ Covid-19 lockdown
A German medical law specialist who launched a rigorous fight against government-mandated coronavirus lockdown rules was taken to a mental health facility after expressing fears she was being targeted by ‘killers.’
Beate Bahner had repeatedly claimed that measures taken by Berlin to stem the spread of Covid-19 threaten nothing less than the nation’s constitutional order itself. The lawyer, from the German city of Heidelberg, was forced to spend a couple of days in a local psychiatric ward after her encounter with police went terribly wrong.
She had already been under police investigation over “calls for an illegal action” after urging Germans to go on a nationwide demonstration against the lockdown last Sunday – in open defiance of the ban on public gatherings.
Bahner called police herself on Sunday when she feared that a car which seemingly blocked her own vehicle in at a parking lot might be driven by “killers” sent to hunt her down. When the officers arrived, she told them she felt persecuted.
What happened next was described by the lawyer as some sort of a nightmarish ordeal.
The police handcuffed her and pushed her to the ground “with brutal force,” Bahner said, in an audio recording attributed to her and which has since been widely circulated online. The officers drove her to a psychiatric ward, where she had to wait for a doctor, who, according to her, “had to first get some instructions from the top or from America.” Bahner said she then had to spend a night in a “Guantanamo-style High Security Ward of Psychiatry,” lying on the floor of her room and without access to a toilet.

China brazenly asked a US politician for good press – here’s what they said
On two occasions since late February, Chinese diplomat Wu Ting emailed Republican Wisconsin State Senator Roger Roth, requesting Roth pass a resolution written by Wu that praised China’s handling of the ongoing coronavirus response.
Wu’s proposed resolution included language stating China had “been effective in curbing the virus from spreading to other parts of China and the world” and has been “transparent and quick” in sharing information about the virus, the New York Times reported after reviewing the emails. The emails to Roth are just some in a continuing pattern of Chinese efforts to garner statements of praise for its handling of the pandemic, with offers of needed coronavirus supplies dangled in exchange.
“I was really taken back at the brazenness of their government to try and influence what we’re doing here,” Roth, the Wisconsin Senate President, told the New York Times.
The Wisconsin Examiner first obtained a copy of the full resolution that Wu sent to Roth. Roth said the first email came in from Wu on Feb. 26 and a second effort came on March 10 as his office worked to verify the authenticity of the request.
Roth answered the email requests with a one-word reply: “Nuts.” On March 26 he introduced a different resolution, to instead condemn the Chinese Communist Party in its handling of the virus. His resolution directly describes the efforts initiated by the Chinese government to get him to pass their more complimentary resolution.

‘Virus exploiting cracks between us’: WHO responds to Trump cutting funding, promises internal probe
World Health Organization Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says its pandemic response will be reviewed in “due course” after President Donald Trump ordered a halt to US funding.
“In due course, [the] WHO’s performance in tackling this pandemic will be reviewed by [the] WHO’s member states and the independent bodies that are in place to ensure transparency and accountability,” Ghebreyesus announced on Wednesday after saying the organization regrets the “decision of the president of the United States to order a halt in funding.”
The director general added that independent reviews will “no doubt” show “areas for improvement” and “lessons for all of us to learn.”
