Russians, Iranians hassle U.S. military in separate incidents

"Russian and Iranian aircraft and boats came dangerously close to U.S. Navy crews in two separate incidents Wednesday. In both cases, no one was injured.

In the first instance, 11 Iranian vessels conducted "dangerous and harassing" approaches of U.S. ships in the international waters of the northern Persian Gulf, coming as close as 10 yards to a Coast Guard cutter, the Navy said.

The incident renews tensions between Tehran and Washington after a recent lull as both countries grapple with the global coronavirus pandemic. It is the first provocative exchange between the two nations since early March, when the U.S. and coalition aircraft struck Iran-backed Kataib Hezbollah militia group locations in Iraq in retaliation for the deaths of two U.S. troops in a rocket attack a day earlier.

The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy vessels repeatedly crossed the bows and sterns of the six U.S. ships — including a guided-missile destroyer and a Coast Guard cutter — at "extremely close range and high speeds," according to a U.S. Navy statement.

The Iranian ships came within 50 yards of the USS Lewis B. Puller, an expeditionary mobile base vessel, and 10 yards of the USCGC Maui, the Coast Guard cutter, during the encounter, the Navy said."

"All 50 of the nation's governors have declared emergencies in their states and now many are starting to activate their Air and Army National Guard to help deal with the growing coronavirus pandemic.

The number of Guard troops mobilized in the effort to cope with the coronavirus pandemic continues to increase.

There are 31,600 Air and Army National Guard professionals supporting the COVID-19 crisis response at the direction of their governors as of Wednesday afternoon. That’s an increase of 1,600 from Tuesday.

In addition, there are now 40 states, three territories and the District of Columbia have now been approved for use of federal funds for state missions under Title 32. That’s an increase of four states on Title 32 status from Tuesday.

As of Wednesday afternoon, 546 Guard troops had tested positive for COVID-19, according to the latest figures provided by the Pentagon. That’s an increase of 24 from Tuesday.

Of the more than 30,000 Guard troops activited in the COVID-19 response, more than a half —16,500 as of Monday — are under Title 32 status. Those figures fluctuate regularly depending on how many missions are performed per state as validated by FEMA and ordered by President Donald Trump.

The status, ordered by Trump, means the federal government is picking up 100 percent of the cost, with control remaining in the hands of governors. It also means that those troops — risking thier health and that of their families by being on the front lines of the coronavirus fight — receive healthcare and increased housing allowance equal to active duty and reserve troops doing the same work.

There was an initial catch. Only troops on 31-day orders were eligible for the increased benefits. That problem, however, was since fixed by Trump."

"At around 9.30pm on Easter Monday, in the small Dutch town of Almere near Amsterdam, the fire brigade was called to put out a blaze at a large telecoms mast — the second fire of its kind that night in the area.

Though neither of the Almere towers were equipped with any of the latest 5G telecoms equipment — in fact one was designed only for use by the emergency services — authorities soon concluded that the fires were perpetrated by vandals acting in the name of an unusual theory: that 5G networks have contributed to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Dutch mast fires are just the latest escalation in a series of similar attacks that have swept across the UK and Europe in recent weeks. Having first gained momentum online in early January, the 5G conspiracy theory — which alleges, among other things, that Covid-19 has either been caused by the frequencies used for the new wireless technology, or that those signals impair the human immune system — has spilled rapidly into the offline world.

In the UK, where the attacks began, almost 60 masts have been set ablaze to date, while this week two towers were vandalised in Co Donegal in Ireland, and another in Limassol in Cyprus was attacked by 18 people. In the Netherlands, there have so far been 11 recorded attempts — one of which was accompanied by a scrawled piece of graffiti that read “Fuck 5G”."
