Smith, being a theorist, was fascinated by medical marijuana and the vast medical effects it appeared to have. He began studying the plant, which led him to the medical system marijuana effects, something called the endocannabinoid system. As Smith began to understand this system, he realized that the endocannabinoid system was probably our master regulatory system. He theorized that very thing and began to develop a new model of human function under the endocannabinoid system.
Smith theorized that this system HAD TO BE influenceable with things other than cannabis. This seemed obvious due to the fact that the endocannabinoid system is an internal system like our endorphin system (a lesser neurological system). The endocannabinoid system is very common and in fact we share it with most life on the planet. For the most part, everything but insects have an endocannabinoid system. Non human mammals did not consume cannabis, and yet they still were able to "work" their endocannabinoid system. This indicated that while cannabis was A WAY to work the endocannabinoid system, there HAD TO BE OTHER WAYS to work this system.
Smith began to research the plant kingdom, and as he did, he found that the plant kingdom is full of endocannabinoid effectors. However, no plant seemed to have enough effectors to completely work the system (up and down regulate). Smith theorized that a plant formulation could be engineered to work like cannabis. He then needed a way to "prove" he was onto something. Smith engineered a plant based formulation, with no cannabis in it, which he theorized would impact the endocannabinioid system like a sativa strain of cannabis. A sativa strain's effects are measurable and measurably different than the other end of the cannabis spectrum called indica. Smith expected to see energetic, uplifting effects from his sativa plant based formula and that is exactly what he got. The kicker would be if he could get indica effects from the same ingredients by just changing ratio's. This would indicate that the ingredients were affecting the neurology of the endocannabinoid system in a predictable way. Smith was able to do just that.
When establishing he could predictably formulate for the endocannabinoid system Smith wrote his landmark patent. Smith also set out to establish his credibility as a theorist and a scientist by immediately forming University ties and beginning to discuss research goals and grants.
In early May of 2020 Smiths patents were issued.
