chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a very powerful immune suppressant. possibly more important in the "up" effect of coffee than caffeine. feeling like shit warmed over arises from mild cytokine activity in the immune system and chlorogenic acid brings relief by slowing the immune system.

yes, pretty much. but we humans like it so much that nobody really wants to study or publish the bad parts.

 

chlorogenic acid fits into the vitamin D receptor but does not activate transcription. just sits there in the receptor blocking other compounds from reaching it and activating transcription. many microbiota make similar compounds to prevent immune function. Capnocytophaga makes capnine, a similar immune suppressant compund acting on the vitamin D receptor.
