Coronavirus testing machine given to county not in proper condition
OROVILLE — The Butte County Board of Supervisors heard an update Tuesday from Public Health Director Danette York regarding the novel coronavirus and the state of testing in Butte County.
Recently, the Butte County Public Health Department received two testing machines from the state level that allow for relatively quick results, but upon running a quality control test on one of the machines, it was discovered that it did not properly work.
One of the machines was going to stay with the department while the other was going to be sent to a local hospital.
“At this point, we are reaching out to the California department of public health to determine what’s going on and we’re not going to send one of those machines to a hospital until we know that it’s working properly,” York said.
With funding provided by the North Valley Community Foundation, the Public Health Department was also able to secure a polymerase chain reaction machine, more commonly known as a PCR machine, which York said provides more accurate test results.
“This is the machine that gives us the real credible test,” York said. “It’s much more accurate on a regular basis so we’re excited to get that started.”
The county will be able to start testing using the PCR machine as soon as its lab is certified by the state.
York also said conversations had begun at the state and federal levels regarding a timeframe as to when stay-at-home orders can start being relaxed.
“I would just like to caution that at least in Butte County and probably lots of other counties in the state of California, when we start being able to relax some of those orders, we’re not out of the woods yet because our peak or surge is most likely coming a lot later than others in the southern part of the state,” York said. “And so relaxing the stay at home order, people starting to get out more is only going to speed that up or increase that peak.”
