KEYS AND LOCKS There is evidence that houses were locked in some way in biblical times (cf. S. of S. 5:5; Neh. 3:3), but nowhere in Palestine have keys or locks of the period been found. On the other hand there are numerous examples from the Hellenistic period and even more from the Roman period. In ancient Greece a very simple form of lock existed: a wooden bar set behind the door, which slid into a hole in the doorpost. A more elaborate arrangement involved the bar being pulled across by a strap from the outside; the door could be opened by means of a key which passed through a hole and lifted up the pegs that held the bar in position. Roman locks were more complicated: an iron bolt was shot through the end link of a chain and secured by pins, the ends of which fitted into a series of perforations in the bolt and were kept down by a spring. The bolt was released by a key fitted with teeth corresponding to the perforations; this lifted the pins out of the holes and took their place. The bolt was then drawn aside as the key was moved along a horizontal slot. To accommodate the double movementโ€”first vertical and then horizontalโ€”the keyhole was in the form of a right-angled slit.
