Six women among nine charged with human trafficking for sexual exploitation

GEORGE TOWN: Six women were among nine people charged with human trafficking at a Sessions Court here on Thursday (April 16).

All nine accused claimed trial to the charges which were read to them before Judge Salha Hamzah.

The women S. Leelavathy, 47; D. Dhanam, 35; S. Rajesvari, 35; B. Kavitah, 33; Sarmilah, 23; T. Kausalya, 21, and the men K. Kumaran, 39; P. Pumagam, 33; and E. Eswaran, 21, along with another person still at large, were charged on three counts of trafficking three women for sexual exploitation.

They were jointly charged under Section 12 of the Anti-Trafficking In Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Act 2007, read together with Section 34 of Penal Code.

Counsels Dr Shamsher Singh Thind and J. Gunamalar represented all the accused, while deputy public prosecutor Farah Aimy Zainul Anwar prosecuted.

DPP Farah told the court that no bail should be offered to all the accused on the ground that there was a flight risk and the case involved human trafficking for sexual exploitation.

"There is a possibility of the accused disturbing the victims," she said.

Shamsher, however, argued that the charges did not prevent one from getting bail.

Judge Salha set bail at RM10,000 with one surety for each of the accused and asked them to surrender their passports to the court.

She also ordered for them to not go near the prosecution witnesses or the victims, before setting May 18 for case management.

It was reported prior to this that police rescued the victims after one of them escaped and lodged a report in January this year.

Police discovered the women had been tricked with job offers in Batu Maung.

However, they were then forced to offer sexual services in Penang, Johor Baru and Melaka. They were also sexually and physically assaulted while they were detained at a rented home in Batu Maung.

Bill Gates Sued For Forcing Staff To Watch Child Rape And Murder

January 12, 2017 Baxter Dmitry

Microsoft staff were forced to view photos and videos of “indescribable sexual assaults”, and “horrible brutality” including the rape and murder of children, resulting in severe post-traumatic stress disorder, according to a lawsuit filed against Bill Gates and Microsoft.

The complaint, filed on behalf of two former employees and their families, outlined the “inhumane and disgusting content” the moderators viewed on a regular basis and alleged that the psychological impact has been so extreme that the men are “triggered” by simply seeing children and can no longer use computers without breaking down.

“It’s horrendous,” said Ben Wells, one of the attorneys who filed the suit in Washington state, where Microsoft is headquartered. “It’s bad enough just to see a child get sexually molested. Then there are murders. Unspeakable things are done to these children.”

Guardian reports:

If the suit prevails, it could have ramifications for corporations across the industry, and Wells said he hopes the case inspires others to speak out about poor working conditions.

A Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement that the company “disagrees” with the claims in the suit and “takes seriously its responsibility to remove and report imagery of child sexual exploitation and abuse being shared on its services, as well as the health and resiliency of the employees who do this important work”.

Plaintiffs Henry Soto and Greg Blauert both worked on the online safety team, which is responsible for complying with legislation passed in 2008 requiring tech companies to report child abuse images and other crimes.

Microsoft did not warn the workers about the dangers of this line of work and the potential for “debilitating injuries”, according to the suit, which was filed in December and was publicly reported this week.

When Soto was “involuntarily transferred” to the unit in 2008, he had “God-like” status, which meant he could view any customer’s communications, the suit said. His job involved assisting law enforcement in breaking up “crime rings” and “violent groups” and required him to view “many thousands of photographs and videos” of violence and brutality.

“Many people simply cannot imagine what Mr Soto had to view on a daily basis as most people do not understand how horrible and inhumane the worst people in the world can be,” his lawyers wrote. Blauert, who was hired as a full-time employee in 2012, was also required to “review thousands of images of child pornography, adult pornography and bestiality that graphically depicted the violence and depravity of the perpetrators.”

[Soto] suffered from an internal video screen in his head and could see disturbing images

Although Microsoft created a “wellness program” and offered a counselor, the services were insufficient and ineffective and the company failed to help the workers understand the “vicarious trauma” and PTSD they were suffering, according to the suit.

Program authorities advised the workers to take walks and smoke breaks and suggested Blauert play video games to manage his symptoms, the complaint said. Later, however, his supervisors allegedly gave him a poor evaluation for “lack of production and too much time playing video games”

When Soto initially met with psychiatrists, he said he was experiencing sleep disturbances, nightmares, anxiety and “suffered from an internal video screen in his head and could see disturbing images”. As time progressed, he began experiencing visual hallucinations, panic attacks in public, disassociation and depression.

“One of the triggers for him is children,” Wells told the Guardian. “At times, he can’t look at his own son … He can’t see a knife in the kitchen … He can’t look at computers.”

London police board talks COVID-19, human trafficking, defers towing service

The monthly meeting of the London Police Services Board was held virtually for the first time

The London Police Services Board met online Thursday to conduct regular business, along with discussing measures around the COVID-19 pandemic.

The virtual meeting saw board members and administrators gather online, some from police headquarters, some from their offices and others from home.

Among the review of standard reports included discussion around COVID-19 emergency powers and social distancing stops by police.

Board chair Dr. Javeed Sukhera reiterated that emergency order enforcement is being carried out by London's bylaw officers.

"We recognize concerns from the community regarding the impact of bylaw enforcement on vulnerable members of our community. We would encourage members of our community to share their feedback and suggestions in this regard with the City of London," said Dr. Sukhera.

21 Londoners fined for breaking emergency measures rules

London's bylaw officers are designated as provincial offences officers, who are responsible for enforcing provincial emergency orders.

"It's worked out quite well, I know they're very busy," said London police chief Stephen Williams. "It's certainly freed our officers up to do the front-line things that they're accustomed to and that the community expects."

While officers are not leading the charge for emergency orders, Williams said they will still issue warnings if they see an infraction.

City receives more than 1,000 reports from public through COVID-19 tip line

London police will be working on drafting a COVID-19 status reporting policy, as directed by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

Dr. Sukhera said the board policy will be distinct from operational procedures and "sensitive to the needs of our community, as well as sensitive to the ethical, privacy, confidentiality and health status issues that are inherent to a policy in this nature."

So far, there have been no reported cases of the virus among the London police force.

Funding to curb human trafficking

The board announced the receipt of a $100,000 grant from the province to implement a human trafficking awareness and education campaign Thursday.

The campaign will be aimed at raising the dangers of human trafficking in our community, focusing on girls aged 11 to 14. Police will be working with local organizations and the city to carry out the program.

Councillor Maureen Cassidy applauded the announcement, addressing the reality that because of London's geographical location, it's a hub for human trafficking activity.

"It is something that perhaps a lot of people in London are not aware of, this situation, this issue," said Cassidy. "This actually fits quite well in with the city's strategic plan. We have five pillars in the strategic plan and one of them is creating a safe London for women and girls."

The details of the campaign are expected to be announced at a later date.

Tow service discussion pushed back

Discussion around the ongoing issue of the force's tow service model was further delayed because of the limits imposed by meeting virtually, meaning public participation was not possible.

Tow truck 'chasing' bylaw halted for now

"The board intends to engage in fulsome discussion on this topic with the opportunity for maximum public engagement," said Dr. Sukhera.

London police have an exclusive contract with Ross' Towing, which some have criticised as giving them a monopoly, leading to the issue of tow truck "chasing" at collisions. London police's contract with Ross' Towing expires at the end of 2020 and is up for another one-year renewal.

That meeting could be held next month.

Hundreds of mystery objects pass ISS in strange video to spark conspiracy frenzy

The baffling footage appeared to show the swarm of lights moving in formation past the International Space Station

One possible explanation is that the lights are simply coming from heavily-populated areas on Earth that seem to be moving as the ISS orbits.

Videos of apparent UFOs spotted on ISS cameras are nothing new.

Last year, a strange ring-shaped object was seen floating past the ISS, bearing a similarity to one of the most famous sightings ever.

And a mysterious “disc-shaped” UFO was seen in October 2019 interrupting a NASA spacewalk.

Facebook Coronavirus ‘Fact Checker’ Worked with Wuhan Virus Lab

Facebook is relying on a “fact checker” that uses “expert opinion” from a researcher who conducted projects with the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the biolab next to the wet market in Wuhan where the Chinese virus originated.

An article from the “expert,” Danielle E. Anderson, an assistant professor at Duke-NUS medical school, was used by Facebook to fact-check a video from the Epoch Times suggesting the Institute, which is located at the original epicenter of the now-global pandemic, as one of the possible origin points.

You cannot make it up.

The "fact checker" Facebook is using to censor a documentary discussing possibility that corinavirus came from Wuhan lab… is scientist who worked at Wuhan lab with Chinese communists.

Honestly, folks. pic.twitter.com/Tqk155S3DD

— Sharyl Attkisson🕵️‍♂️ (@SharylAttkisson) April 15, 2020

This is not a fringe claim — CNN reports that the U.S. intelligence community is currently investigating the same laboratory as the possible source of the outbreak. The same thread of investigation that got ZeroHedge banned from Twitter in late January is now being looked at by the U.S. government and reported on by the mainstream media.

Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that the intelligence community is taking a “hard look” at the question of whether the Chinese virus originated in a lab.

Nevertheless, for suggesting the same theory, Facebook has relied on a “fact checker” who has a conflict of interest — someone who has conducted collaborative projects with the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and whose reputation would be harmed by her connection to it if the virus were found to have originated there.

In Anderson’s “fact check” of the claim, she writes:

“I will disclose that I am a scientist trained to work in high containment and have collaborative projects with the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). I have worked in this exact laboratory at various times for the past 2 years. I can personally attest to the strict control and containment measures implemented while working there. The staff at WIV are incredibly competent, hardworking, and are excellent scientists with superb track records.”
