my neighbor had a wild apple that grew as a tree without regard for fruit but every spring it would bloom and give an amazing show. There may have been two of these. They were not pruned to produce fruit, so they were as tall as the maples, that also grow.
then they moved and the new neighbors wanted light so they cut down many many trees without regard to the awesomeness of the blooming apple.
sad.
but . . . I was out in the Spring last year and I noticed one of the new saplings, already very tall, with just a few buds on it but . . . it's an apple tree. It might be growing from the roots of the old tree that was cut down because it sprung up very tall with in a short time. I shodl go and see if it has blooms today.
I bet you get new growth from the roots if you leave them in the ground. You might do the future a favor and just let a new tree grow there. It'll grow really quickly because all those roots want light. and they will reach out to the Sun.
