“Trump is taking a beating both in the polls and with the COVID-19 pandemic."

 

The coronavirus is taking President Trump down, and hard, as “antsy” voters worried about their next paycheck and suburbanites watching their retirement savings evaporate turn to Joe Biden in the latest 2020 presidential poll.

 

In the survey shared with Secrets, the Zogby Poll has Biden up 47%-42%, and pollster Jonathan Zogby used words including “drubbing,” “battering,” and “beating” to describe the hits Trump is taking as he figures a way out of the virus crisis.

What’s more, the national poll of likely voters with a margin of error of 2.7 points, plus or minus, shows New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo edging Trump, 45%-44%.

 

“Trump is taking a beating both in the polls and with the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Zogby’s analysis. “Trump will need to change his message from blame game to one of safety and economics. Voters are getting antsy and need income. Stimulus checks will only go so far. Voters will need to get back to work safely and soon,” he added.

 

Of course, that is exactly what Trump plans to do in announcing his blueprint today to get workers back in the office.

 

An official familiar with the president’s address to the country tonight said he will express concern for those affected by the virus, but explain why it is also important to put people back to work.

 

“The tone of his remarks will be optimistic, but also empathetic for those who lost loved ones. He wants to continue the two track approach of continuing to work with industry and states to eradicate the virus, while also putting millions of Americans back to work,” said the official.

 

He better work fast, said Zogby.

 

Because Biden has overtaken Trump with virtually every important group. “Joe Biden is taking it to Donald Trump,” he said.

 

Zogby provided his breakdowns:

Biden is battering Trump among women (Biden leads 50% to 36%), younger voters aged 18-29 (Biden leads 49% to 38%), Hispanics (Biden leads 46% to 39%), African Americans (Biden leads 74% to 16%), independents (Biden leads 41% to 36%), voters without college degrees (Biden leads 49% to 39%), suburban voters (Biden leads 46% to 43%), large city voters (Biden leads 49% to 41%), small city voters (Biden leads 47% to 41%), suburban voters (Biden leads 46% to 43%), and suburban women (Biden leads 53% to 34%). Of significant importance is that Biden is beating Trump where it matters the most, in the Central/Great Lakes region (Biden leads 46% to 43%), while Trump is clinging to a small lead in the South (Trump leads 46% to 43%). Biden also does well with voters in the East (Biden leads 49% to 39%) and West regions (Biden leads 51% to 37%).

 

Trump, he said, is winning among men, rural voters, whites, Catholics, and weekly Amazon and Walmart shoppers.

 

The breakdown is similar, though closer, in a hypothetical Trump-Cuomo race, though the results of the Zogby Poll and other recent polls suggests that Democrats are likely to be happy with Biden as the nominee.

 

The bottom line, said Zogby, is that “Trump is losing appeal with independents, suburban voters, and urban voters. Trump can still win these voters back.”
