This was in the 90's at SJAFB in NC.. it only happened a few times that I remember. We had to replace the area with damage and write it all up in the logs. I remember a vertical stab on my jet had one.

Not unless they got crazy lucky.. the Jets have tripple redundancy on most of the vital parts. We had one fly threw a flock of seagulls once and return home with half the jet on fire and had huge holes everywhere. The pilot was told to dump it in the ocean but flew her home.. it completely shelled out the right motor.. fucking mess

Its was so bad … took out the front canopy, pilot and wizzo covered in blood and shit. Right engine took most of it, you could see threw it. And when it shelled out it blew into the cft catching it on fire. I think the pilot got a desk job after for not dumping it. Jet never flew again..
