Nationwide, COVID-19 has taken the life of 30 grocery store employees, including a 70-year old Safeway worker in Seattle.
At least 3,000 employees nationwide are quarantined, hospitalized or waiting for test results for the virus according to UFCW—the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union.
In Puget Sound, UFCW21 represents 25,000 grocery store workers—including employees at QFC/Fred Meyer and Safeway/Albertsons, according to union spokesman Tom Geiger.
Geiger said grocery store workers are on the front lines of the COVID pandemic and they see hundreds of customers every day.
On Tuesday, Geiger said “dozens of local employees at least 10 stores” have tested positive for the virus. He could not say exactly how many, but he did say the stores included all the bigger chains: Safeway, QFC/Fred Meyer, and PCC Community Markets.
Geiger also said that a part-time grocery store worker died at a Safeway store in Rainier Valley.
