Prayers of the Rosary

 

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God,

the Father almighty,

Creator of heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried;

he descended into hell;

on the third day he rose again from the dead;

he ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;

from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

 

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

The Our Father

There is an optional prayer, often used in recent years :

First time I'd noticed that as well.

 

First, the Rosary is not a prayer to Mary. It is a meditation on the life of Christ. Each mystery of the rosary is focused on the very Biblical events of the Gospels. To say that the Rosary is not biblical is not accurate at all.

 

When you look at the components of the Rosary individually you’ll see 1) that every part of the Rosary is biblical in nature and 2) each part has deep meaning contrary to the claim of “mindless pagan babbling” or “vain repetition” that it’s often described as. I invite you to read Fr. Longenecker’s comments on vain repetition for a deeper understanding of Matthew 6:7, and also read Elizabeth Scalia’s thoughts on the question, here.

 

The Rosary is composed of the following prayers – Ave Maria (Hail Mary), Pater Noster (the Lord’s Prayer, given to us by Christ Himself), Gloria Patri (Glory Be), Apostles Creed, the various mysteries of faith, and a concluding Salve Regina.

 

When Catholics pray the “Hail, Mary” prayer they are not praying to Mary but are asking for her prayers of intercession for us, in the same manner that you may ask friends, family, or your clergy to pray for you. Only her intercessory prayers are more powerful because she is the Mother of our Lord and sits at His side in Heaven. The Hail Mary prayer is taken straight out of the Bible, off the lips of the Archangel Gabriel, the messenger of the Lord (Luke 1:28 NAB), and from Elizabeth’s words of praise when the child in her womb recognized Jesus as the Messiah (Luke 1:42 NAB) .

 

The doxology Gloria Patri, or Glory Be, is nothing more than a hymn of praise to the Holy Trinity.

 

“Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen”

 

The Mysteries of the Rosary are meditated on while praying each decade (ten Hail Mary beads), with the purposes of drawing the person praying deeper into reflecting on Christ’s’ joys, sacrifices, sufferings, and the glorious miracles of His life.

WHERE IS THE HAIL MARY IN THE BIBLE?

The Hail Mary is broken up into two parts: 1. Who Mary is. 2. Our prayer to Mary. The first half of the Hail Mary (rows 1-5) is contained in Luke 1. The second half (rows 5-6) come from Luke 1, James 5 and various other Biblical texts. Below the Hail Mary is examined line by line:

  1. Hail Mary, full of Grace Luke 1:28 (Hail, full of Grace) The Angel Gabriel greets Mary with very respectful greeting used for royalty. The text doesn’t say “Mary” after Hail but it is implied. Gabriel then proclaims Mary full of Grace (full of God’s own life and love)

  2. The Lord is with You Luke 1:28 (The Lord is with you) This is word for word. The Angel Gabriel said that the Lord is with Mary; she is full of his Grace, his own life. h

  3. Blessed are you among Women Luke 1:41 (Blessed are you among women) Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit; she is inspired by the 3rd person of the Blessed Trinity to proclaim that Mary is the most blessed among all women.

  4. And Blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus Luke 1:42 (and blessed is the fruit of your womb) Elizabeth still inspired by the Holy Spirit proclaims that the fruit of Mary’s womb, the developing Jesus, is blessed. The text doesn’t say “Jesus” after womb, but it is implied, the fruit of her womb is Jesus.

  5. Holy Mary, Mother of God Luke 1:43 (And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?) Mary is full of God’s grace; this would make her holy. Mary is the mother of the Lord Jesus Christ who is the 2nd person of the Holy Trinity. Since Jesus is God this makes her the mother of God. She is the mother of the God-Man Jesus, not the mother of the Trinity.

  6. Pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death James 5:16 (Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects) St. James tells Christians to pray for one another. All the baptized are members of the body of Christ (1Cor 12:12-14), therefore it is right to pray for other members of the body. James goes on to say that the prayers of the righteous have great power. What human (other then Jesus) is more righteous then the Blessed Mother. Though she is in heaven she still hears the prayers of her children on Earth and intercedes for them.

All Bibles in existence were complied by the Church. Some have been truncated by protestants, which is deceptive and unfortunate. The so-called protestant Bible is actually just the Catholic Bible less several books. The seven books included in Catholic Bibles are Tobit, Judith, 1 and 2 Maccabees, Wisdom, Sirach, and Baruch. Catholic Bibles also include sections in the Books of Esther and Daniel which are not found in Protestant Bibles .

It is protestants who are heretical and schismatic, as their name identity clearly designates. Schism was nothing new in the 1530s. But all the protestant denominations eventually fade away. If you study the first 1000 years of church history, you will see that.

That's how I started as well. The KJV is poetic and great to read even as literature, however, it's not great as a translation. Modern translations are more faithful to the Hebrew and to the Greek, which I've read. Knowledge of ancient languages has advanced since 1607, as you can imagine.
