My mother lived in Indian Springs Nevada from conception to her first two years, where testing was done. This was 1956, 1957, 1958. My grandfather was enlisted in the USAF. They lived in a small trailer with other enlisted families. Plutonium for certain and who knows what else. Test subjects. Including small children. Here, in the USA. The military posted notes to doors, telling of an upcoming test; to stay indoors until after the bright flash, then it was okay to go outside and look at the mushroom. They'd hold up old car hoods and feel the radiation from the mushroom cloud push it.
(From there they were stationed in Germany and France).
(Later on, my mother enlisted and eventually worked in a hanger in NV along with my father).
