Canada's Globe and Mail has a new editor-in-chief - David Walmsley. He takes the job next week, having been recruited from CBC News, where he was director of news. He succeeds John Stackhouse, who had been in the chair since 2009.

Walmsley, 43, who has dual Canadian and British citizenship, began his journalistic career in Belfast and later worked for the Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph.

He moved to Canada in 1998 when the then Telegraph owner, Conrad Black, launched the National Post.

"David is joining the Globe and Mail at a pivotal time for our industry, as consumer needs continually change and the role of journalism needs to adapt," said Phillip Crawley, The Globe's British-born publisher.

A Globe source, quoted by The Province, described Walmsley as having "a bit of the old British, Fleet Street, go-for-the-jugular kind of instinct" when it comes to news.

Legislation allowing cities to ban handguns to come, Canada PM says

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Sunday that lawmakers were working to introduce legislation that would allow individual cities to ban handguns.

The move follows a ban on 1,500 different types of "assault weapons" last week.

Trudeau said the government is also working on legislation dealing with the border and gun storage, although it unclear when that legislation will appear.

"We know there is more to do on strengthening gun control in this country which is why we're going to be moving forward when Parliament allows it with stronger measures around borders, stronger measures around safe storage," Trudeau said. "Measures around handguns to permit municipalities to ban handguns within their city limits."

Legislation will also need to be introduced to support the two-year amnesty and buyback program required for last week's ban.

Canadian Officials Concerned by Attacks on Cell Towers Amid 5G Conspiracy Theories

Canadian officials are sounding the alarm over a spate of attacks on cell towers as conspiracy theories claim that 5G technology might be contributing to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“Concerned to hear reports of cellphone towers being vandalized in Canada. I would like to remind all Canadians that vandalizing these towers is a serious criminal offence, and severe criminal penalties will be brought against those found breaking the law,” Public Safety Minister Bill Blair tweeted on Tuesday.

Blair’s comments echoed that of the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, Navdeep Bains, who also voiced his concern over the spate of incidents.

According to reports, multiple cell towers in the province of Quebec have been the target of arson attacks in recent days. None of the towers in question are equipped with 5G technology, officials and local outlets said.

5G – the next generation of cellular networks – has long faced backlash with many people voicing concerns on social media about health implications of the new technology. Fears about a possible connection between the deadly COVID-19 pandemic and the new mobile broadband standard have led to dozens of attacks on cell towers across Europe.

Scientists, as well as leading European health and government officials and public figures, have repeatedly stated that there is no evidence to suggest that 5G radiation causes physical ailments or diseases, with Professor Stephen Powis, national medical director for NHS England, calling the claims "outrageous" and "absolute and utter rubbish”, and the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Michael Gove, dubbing the links “dangerous nonsense”.

Tech giants Google, YouTube and Facebook have taken measures to address the spread of "misleading health claims" linked to Coronavirus and 5G conspiracy theories.

YouTube started banning videos linking 5G masts with the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, while Facebook is preventing users from forwarding a message to more than one chat at a time in its WhatsApp service, in a bid to clamp down on disinformation.

Google has begun cracking down on advertising that claims 5G causes the virus.

Unsealed Warrant Reveals Canadian Nova Scotia Police Knew About Gunman Hours Before Tragedy

On 18 and 19 April, the Canadian province of Nova Scotia saw a deadly mass shooting carried out by a 51-year-old dentist named Gabriel Wortman, who killed 22 people, including a federal police officer. The shooter was later killed by police.

A recently unsealed warrant revealed on Tuesday that the Nova Scotia Police became aware of the fact that a gunman with several firearms was driving a fake police car in the province 12 hours before they warned the public.

Police killed the gunman, but not until he had murdered 22 people during his 18-19 April killing spree.

The 40-page warrant, part of which is redacted, revealed that the shooter's neighbours informed police that the 51-year-old posed a threat before he started his horrific massacre.

“[The shooter] wasn’t a police officer wannabe and didn’t like police officers and thought he was better than them,” the supsect's partner, who suffered a severe beating and was handcuffed by the shooter before she was able to escape on the evening of 18 April, told police, according to the document.

The woman narrated that she saw him that day putting a number of firearms inside a car that was modified to look like a Royal Canadian Mounted Police cruiser.

The warrant also stated that a neighbour told police at the scene of the first shooting in Portapique on the night of 18 April that he was shot by a man he identified as Wortman. He also said that the suspect was dressed as a police officer and was driving a “police vehicle”.

Despite being aware of the information, the Nova Scotia police did not warn the public until the morning of the next day, according to The Guardian.
