Anon recommends David Lynch's family movie, "The Straight Story"
I decided to to take a break from this board last night when my 13 year old son made a rare request that we turn off all our devices and watch a movie together as a family. Though my wife and I were a bit reluctant after watching "Out of Shadows", we were so happy that we did. I think that David Lynch's 1999 movie, "The Straight Story" is a perfect example of the kind great movie making that the creators of Out of Shadows hope to make in the future.
I don't know how my son found it, but this movie had us wiping back tears for damn near the whole 112 min. The film is based on a true story of a man's journey across Iowa and Wisconsin on a lawn mower. Alvin is an elderly World War II vet who lives with his daughter Rose, a kind woman with autistic like features. When Alvin hears that his estranged brother has suffered a stroke, he makes up his mind to go visit him and hopefully make amends before he dies. Because Alvin's legs and eyes are too impaired for him to receive a driving license, he hitches a trailer to his recently purchased 30-year-old John Deere 110 Lawn Tractor, having a maximum speed of about 5 miles per hour (8.0 km/h) and sets off on the 240 miles (390 km) journey from Lauren's, Iowa to Mount Zion, Wisconsin.
Alvin explains his mission as "a hard swallow to [my] pride," but "a brother is a brother."
So, needless to say, when I opened up my laptop this morning to see Q's last post, those tears started flowing again. If you haven't seen this movie, I encourage you all to watch it with your family. You will not regret it.
